Why doesn't he just set the same fan speeds across all tests so we can get proper comparisons? What I'm garnering from this is that NVIDIA default fan speeds suck, and its better to just set it at a high speed all the time.

MikeC ran Furmark with the fan at 100% and the temps were still 99C.

Those benchmarks actually show that Furmark is irrelevant when trying to compare temps across cards, because all cards are going to heat to their threshold. This doesn't represent day-to-day gaming like in the Crysis bench. And as you see in the Crysis bench, 480 is much hotter than any other card. It's actually 20c hotter than GTX285. Crazy.

But with the 480 (non-OC) temps, the card is one of the coolest in the test. Must be a rather cold room he's testing in, but still...

Nope if you look closely you'll notice that the OC'ed GTX 480 is the coolest due to the fan running at 75%.

Wasn't MikeC testing how the fan brings down the temps from its upper limit. From what I understand he slowed down the fan until the card reached 105C and then he put it on 100% and it cooled it back down to eventually to 99C. Thats how I understood his post at least.

lol...did he just run 75% fan on the gtx 480 and then leave the rest on default settings? The ati cards have a very low fan setting as well by default.

Yes, but 100% fan speed doesn't reduce the temps lower than 99C?
