The more I browse tech forums, the more it looks like that might be the smart choice.

I am still trying to determine if I really need to upgrade from my SLi'd GTX 280s w/ 9600GSO...

It will get worse.... for stress I'd much rather see someone use something like F@H or any CUDA enabled application. It stresses your gpu out far more than most games.

I hit 96 C when in linux crunching numbers with my gpu.... in contrst I'm peaking at 88 C in games (Crysis, Batman AA, BC2, .... name it)

Third party cooler makers are having a field day.
I suppose with the right cooler, a 4xx board might be a lot more attractive with lower temps and noise levels.
The Palit board looks promising with 2 larger fans.
I recall my 6800GT went from around 100c load to 54c or something like that swapping out Gigabytes broken cooler for a VF700CU.

My experience with stock coolers is they suck. Third party coolers have always been better. They cool better and are much more quiet.

But they´re generally sufficient, for the 4x0 boards the stock cooler seems to be barely that, looking at what temps they´re getting.

also this

FAN is set to low in the cards BIOS.

at 96c it only reached 66% fan speed, when you udjust fan to go higher, temps will be lower.

66% is a low setting for fan, my 280GTX goes higher then that.

In fact we have a gut feeling that NVIDIA we reprogram the FAN RPM delta real soon, forcing the fan speed RPM at 70% which was not even every noisy, pushed the temperatures back to 80 Degrees C real quickly.

Yeah if you like listening to vacuum cleaners. Besides since when have reviews from foreign sites been seen as legit? I'd take MikeC's word over some Romanian's any day.
