![]() The GTX480 is pulling another 173W over the 8800GT. That is a lot of power to dissipate somewhere. I'd agree the 4870x2 is in the same boat and can only imagine how hard it is to cool a case with one of those in it. What would be really interesting to see is if someone took numbers off the north bridge and CPU with those cards in the same case, and see how much of an increase it causes to the other components. If you OC'ed your processor you might need to double check your settings as it might not be stable with the added heat. |

Damnit, This card looks like it is just what I need in terms of features. Raw horsepower in a single card and I can mod it easily to cook my breakfast ! Seriously, I am hyped about the tessellation advantage it has over ATI. With the tessellation system in the card being fully programmable by design I think we are going to be seeing this used quite a bit as it is such an easy way for devs to get very high poly scenes out of low poly designs.

The 4870x2 is extremely hot as well... but cooling for that card is done completely internally; there are no exposed heat pipes or cooling chambers. It's all covered by a plastic casing, which somewhat insulates the heat being generated. This means that most of the heat generated by the card is immediately exhausted outside of the case, and the problem of heat dissipation doesn't involve the rest of your computer. Exposed heatpipes and cooling fins... that is the problem. Everyone and their dog is saying that the heatpipes get so hot that they can burn you if you stay in contact with it too long. That by itself should raise a red flag that this card runs way too hot.

A little concerned with Nvidia on this one for sure. Doesnt it seem realistic that maybe Nvidia had to launch despite this issue so that they would at least have a product available to fight ATI ? I think they decided to launch, cross their fingers on this heat issue and hope for the best. I cant imagine that they could afford to give Ati time for a refresh which you know is coming so they set it free as the lesser of two evils. The temps are way out of line. I can not see oem's even touching this thing ? Maybe the 470. I am on board but only because my pc is in a room behind my big screen LCD and home theater setup with cables running through a conduit I made. I can crank huge fans to high rpms and not hear a thing. If I had to game at a desk I would have to pass and hope for a refresh that brings this blast furnace under control. We need to use this heat that is escaping dont you guys think ? Setup your system so that you can put your coffee near the rear of card to keep it warm ? We need a top 10 things your fermi can be used for other than gaming. 10. Place your winter gloves near the rear of the card 10 minutes before going outside in the winter. Run furmark and you will have toasty gloves in no time.

I wonder how much effect on heat the PPU has on these cards?

![]() Can you run some tests on temps on the PCB, the heatpipes and the exhaust, if you have the equipment to test for that? It will be very interesting to see what results pop out. Also, ambient noise inside/outside the case? Pretty plz? ![]() |

Problem is with ONE GTX 480 I would be downgrading, so I would have to buy two GTX 480, I believe running GTX 480 in SLI even in the good ventilated CosmoS would be way too HOT. One off the main reason I was waiting for the HD 5970 was because I was worried the faster HD 5870 in Crossfire might be too hot since I would have to place them next to each other. Looking at your posted graph and the HD 5870 76 C temp, I could have most likely run them in Crossfire even next too each other in my good ventilated CosmosS. Anyway I really don't need any upgrade and if I did, for me would be much cheaper to get a second HD 5970 and that would run much cooler and probably faster than the GTX 480 SLI.
