The main things is, we can play Windows games which is better than nothing.
I agree that it will get better with time, but I wouldn't be surprised if WINE or XOver or whatever is still 10 steps behind in 5 years like we are now. I don't care about DX10 or DX11 so much, I just want DX9 games to run with a little AA/AF and at a playable framerate 30FPS and higher.

I'm going to try some games this weekend, but I wouldn't be shocked if some have poor performance.

Any of you used Timevault before?

It's rather dated, but apps for creating images of a fresh install seem scarce.

You may want to try Deja-Dup. It's in the Software Centre. Website https://launchpad.net/deja-dup or Back In Time http://backintime.le-web.org/ which is also in the Software centre.

Back in time looks pretty good. I may have to try that this weekend.

Is this an NTFS formatted drive? That 'might' be an issue then but Ubuntu does read/write NTFS by default.

Actually in the last test done by Phoronix between Win7 and Ubuntu, the later didn't too bad against 7 with the gaming tests, of course it lagged but not by much in the gaming department which was a big surprise really.

If you want AA in WINE just do the following:

Run regedit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Wine>Direct3D.

If you don't have a Direct3D option just create a new key and name it "Direct3D". Create a new string value in there called "MultiSampling". Double click it and put "enabled" as the value. AA should show in your games now. You can install winetricks and do it via a UI if you want.

Yeah, it's NTFS.

Here is some output from Samba:

WINE Tips:

Get the latest WINE for Ubuntu http://www.winehq.org/download/deb

CodeWeavers Crossover, but it's not free(only trial) http://www.codeweavers.com/

Winetricks http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

Turn off Visual Effects(composting) while running WINE.

Offscreen Rendering Mode, fbo works better for NVIDIA hardware.

Make WINE look better http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...62&postcount=1

I finally got the shared folder issue fixed.

I did an experiment this morning: Running Left 4 Dead 2 in Wine. It didn't turn out that great TBH. I turned off Compiz, ran the game in windowed mode and turned everything completely down. Even with a Quad Core, 4GB RAM and a 260GTX, framerates were crap.

Yep, as said, the games will lag in WINE. Portal is laggy for me as well but playable with MSAA x4, AF 16x, 1440x900. Try turning off HDR.
