One thing MAJORLY better over ati cards: NO MORE GOD DAMN DX10 problems with my HDTV. Often times in dx10/11 games the screen would go into 1080i or in some games it'd alt tab out and in and it change from p to i and i'd have to reset the res. This has not happened once.

If you aren't going to overclock, then definitely do not buy a 480, you will just be wasting the money.

As for Valve, their average customer has the computer know how of an eggplant, so it doesn't surprise me they are telling them not to overclock. Saves them the trouble of having to deal with the issues it would cause.

So my local CompUSA has a good returns policy and I went ahead and got a 470 to try it out. I have to say, overall, despite what the benchmarks say, this card is better on my system. Many games run better than they did on the 5870 (games not often benchmarked) and overall I actually saw a difference in pretty much every game, getting 5-10fps more in most titles. Metro 2033 runs great at high settings in DX10, which it certainly did not before.

That said, is it a $350 difference? I am not sure... tempted to say no. Magus thinks I might be PSU limited (600w) and everyone here thinks I am CPU limited... the truth will take some investigation.

Still, given the overall increase in game performance, which I did NOT see with the 5870, I am tempted to keep the card and figure out how to get more from it. Or maybe trade it in for a 480, but that would require a new PSU and my girl trying to kill me.

After looking at some of these post I don't think you need another cpu. mailman2 said he had to over clock his i7 860. So why buy and new cpu. the Q9550 and the i7 860 are about the same speed.

Yeah, I am going to try a stock cooling overclock after I figure out what card I want.

I'm build a rig with the Q9550 but I am water cooling everything. So I am going to overclock the heck out of it.

From what I have googled so far you can OC a Q9550 to 3.4Ghz on stock cooling. With a GTX 400 series in there though, I dunno.

So why don't anyone make a 4 gig cpu yet? If the video needs a cpu like that you think hmmmm.

They don't make them because they require higher voltages to run at clocks that high.

Then why produce video cards that do require 4 gig?
