[quote=abtomat74;2269709]Well, it's $1000 more than I spent on my AM3 quad system, and the only real performance difference you will have is your GPU being better than mine(5870 vs GTX275)...at least until 6 cores become usable in games of course. Right now the 6 core is the same or worse than the same speed 4 core in games.

Do you really need all that "extra" ****? That money could be saved for the replacement GPU in a year or two, or a larger monitor with second card now. But hey, it's your money.

well i can change my mind and get a i7 930 system. but the 6 cores system seems like they are getting popular very soon and most games already in the works with it.

i have to point this out, a Ferrari is not a Ferrari with out Ferrari red.

but anyways. this is not a budget system. its not going to be from the start. i understand i can save money but you need to go around and say that to every person and place and stop buying quality computer parts because they are to much to buy lol. why do you think they make things like this? its a hoppy.

If you're going for Ferrari price and performance, you should get the best internals before buying all the accessories.

You're aiming more at a tricked out Honda right now.

Seriously, get an i7. A quad core i7 920 at 2.66Ghz beats a 6 core Phenom II X6 1090T at 3.2Ghz in almost every situation, and in some cases it totally stomps it.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/146?vs=47

There really is no need to get a Phenom II X6 for a high performance system unless you're upgrading an existing AMD system. They're good CPUs, but the performance-per-clock is nowhere near that of the i7 (or even a Core 2 Quad), despite having two more cores. At equal clocks, an i7 will win every time, so if you're spending all that money on cooling, why not get a setup that will make the best of it?

Wouldn't it bug you to know that you spent $2000 on a system with a CPU that's outpaced in most games and benchmarks by a two year old Core 2 Quad? Even when overclocked?

If a program is threaded (which most new software is) the C2Q gets crushed. Also the Phenom x6's scale really well with clock speed. Much better than their intel counter parts.

Even though I somewhat agree with you (I'm not upgrading my Core 2 Quad yet for this same reason) I think those gaming benchmarks are a little misleading as they don't tell the whole story.

For GPU I dismiss any benchmarks that:
1) Don't show minumum FPS
2) Don't test with realistic settings (High res, AA/AF enabled, highest in game settings)

But just recently I've come to wondering, why shouldn't it be the same for CPU? I want to see how a CPU performs in the settings I game at! I want to know the average AND minimum FPS. If one gets higher max FPS at the start of the benchmark where there's very little going on or even a blank screen (something that actually happens in the FarCry 2 bench) and that effects the average, how is that accurate to real world use?

Because of this I won't let benchmarks from Anandtech and many other similar sites sway my decision because they don't represent the real world result you get when actually using either CPU.

Talking Re: hows this system

I have the same processor and 2 sets of the RAM you ordered.

I run the processor at a mild overclock of 3.52GHz. I have run the processor for benchmarking at 4.1-4.2GHz, and it was fine, but the temps were a little high for air.

The RAM is fantastic. I decided to underclock mine down to 1600MHz so I could run it at 6-7-6-18-1T. That is awesome timings for 1600MHz. It's also doing it at 1.5V. I did have to manually set the timings in the BIOS, but it works perfectly. I went through 3 sets of 6GB Corsair CL7 1600MHz sets before I swapped them for the G.Skill (thanks for that, Newegg).

Since the mobo you ordered is similar to the giga-byte I have, you should be in for a treat. It was a little rough going at the start (frickin Corsair garbage RAM), but now all is well and I am stoked at the performance I get from my setup.

(Hint: Stay away from MSI Afterburner and be sure to use RadeonPro - Afterburner was causing stuttering on my 5970)
