One problem with this is that the version you cite (195.36.24) is not available from the ppa. Being new, I have no clue as to how long it takes for that to appear and if even it will I note that the 3 PPA versions I stated in my first post are the only ones I see and I know that other folks and the nVidia site list gobs more versions. Yet, you still indicate that the "config" is still not restoring all that is needed. Hence, it is still a big issue.
thanks, oldunixguy PS. How does one attach the file nvidia-bug-report.log.gz to a post here as requested by forum leaders? |

I have developed a work around that allows one to establish a good and proper xorg.conf file! This is how I did it for dual monitors...
1. power on both monitors 2. boot linux 3. run nvidia-settings from the System->Administration menu or sudo nvidia-settings from shell 4. select Detect Displays to activate the second monitor 5. configure both displays' resolution, depth, refresh rate and mode etc. (Twinview is the mode I want) 6. select Save to X Configuration File and then select Show preview... 7. copy the text and paste into a file you create someplace 8. quit nvidia-settings without saving the config (because you can't save it) 9. leave GUI mode to multiuser text mode: sudo invoke-rc.d gdm stop 10. login and sudo bash 11. cd /etc/X11 12. edit xorg.conf a. delete all b. read in the contents of the file you saved in step 7 c. save file 13. logout and ctrl-alt-del to reboot |

sorry, I didn't say that very clearly.. what I was meaning to say was that with Lynx being released, I wasn't sure anyone would be doing PPA for Karmic... I'm still using Karmic, so I did the pkg file under Karmic. I have not yet deciphered the warnings in the Lynx release notes about installing pkg files under Lynx.

This workaround works. Solved the problem that has been plaguing me for months.
