Default GTX 480 fan is NOT LOUD! What's up with these reviewers?

I just got my Galaxy GTX 480 to replace my GTX 295. Yes, it's not that much of an upgrade, but I was surprised how quiet the GTX 480 is compared to my GTX 295. I could hear the GTX 295 humming along whan I was playing Just Cause 2 or Crysis Warhead, but I can hardly hear the GTX 480. What's more, the GTX 480's fan powers down right after gaming. The performance of the GTX 480 is astounding, easily surpassing the GTX 295 in all my games without the SLI hassles. You should definitely get one of these cards. I don't know why so many reviewers are biased against Nvida. Maybe they all read Semi-Accurate? Once the REAL word gets out on these cards, they'll be even tougher to find!

Yes, most reviewers are biased against Nvidia, even though they are the larger company with more influence between the two (AMD / NV).

Well, 295 is one of the noisiest cards in recent memory so it's no surprise the 480 is quieter. When I switched from 295 to 5870, the biggest thing I noticed was the reduction in noise.

This entirely depends upon what you are used to in regards to the graphics card that was replaced and what speed the fan is running.
Having had a GTX 260, my new GTX 470 is about the same until I reach 70% fan speed.
At 100% it's ridiculously loud, I laughed out loud at how noisy that was.
Luckily I can run under full load at 75% fan speed and get good temps.

My fan is not running over 70%. I have a large case with plenty of ventilation, so that may help. Still I was afraid this thing would be a leaf blower like the FX 5800, but it is NOT! If you turn up the fan on any card it will get loud. This card's fan sounds like a gentle swoosh. I'm also impressed how fast it powers down after I finish a game. WHAT A CARD!!!!!! The more people get this card, the more they will be impressed. It's not cheap by any means, but you get what you pay for. I know I sound like a green fanboy, but this card really screams. Most of the reviews I read of the GTX 480 were poor or lukewarm at best. Man, I don't know what these reviewers were drinking! Hey, the Radeon HD 5870 is also not cheap at over $400. For what the GTX 480 offers (PhysX, CUDA, Superior Tesellation), I would take it any day.

I think most reviewers just look at the benchmark numbers instead of judging a card's actual performance during gameplay. In that regard, the 5870 will outpetform a 470GTX 80 to 90 percent of the time.

They are the same as the 5870s when gaming and that's a fact, when benching the 4xxs are louder.

I've noticed that Vsync has a huge effect on fan noise and heat. When I'm just gaming with Vsync on, the 5870s hardly go above 80 degrees with minimal fan noise. However, during benching, either the cards will hit 90 F and throttle or I'll have to use a customized profile to drive up the fans to really loud levels.
