I found that the default auto fan speed ramping was unacceptable, it seemed to wait too long to speed up the fan at which point it was playing catch-up.
I was running at 75% fixed but found that using Afterburner and setting up linear fan speed ramping works great.
I'm still running 75C after the temp levels out using Kombustor, the fan still speeds up to 75% but is much quieter when I'm not running a 3D app.
I set the bottom threshhold at 50% fan speed which is practically inaudible.

So what about the people that have owned both ? actually I had 3 5870s at one time...

I currently have a 5870 and the GTX 480s, and I can tell you that the fans are around the same noise level when both are set at 100%. The difference is that I can just leave the 5870 fans on auto and the temps will stay down while the fan remains fairly quiet in most gameplay sessions. While I have to set the GTX 480 fans to at least 80% to be comfortable with the temps (and at that speed its about as loud as my GTX 280s were on 100%).

The other difference is that I have the machine with the 5870 on the ground near my TV in a case with only one outtake fan, while I have the GTX 480s in my Antec 900 sitting on a cabinet next to my desk with 5 case fans on high, so of course the GTX 480s are gonna be much louder to me.

The GTX 480 temp and noise levels are not out of line with the previous generation of NVIDIA. The issue is that the competition is so exceptional in this category that it makes the NVIDIA cards look much worse this generation in that regard.

I dislike loud systems, but the high idle temperature really bugs me. Not for longevity, or even for sound, but I use my computer for a lot more than gaming. A card that idles that hot just makes my office unbearable. I do put my computer to sleep, but dang.

I'm sure the next revision will address these issues. NV will stay competitive.

Not everyone likes to keep their fans at 70% to idle at 44c.

And you totally misunderstood Q's concern, anyway. It really doesn't matter if your 480 idles at 30c. It consumes more power than any single GPU card ever and that power is eventually turned into heat. Where do you think it goes? Even if the fan on the card is efficient enough to move it off the GPU and keep the GPU cool, it dumps the heat into the room.

Roughly the same idle temps as I get.

The performance of the GTX 480 is astounding, easily surpassing the GTX 295 in all my games without the SLI hassles. You should definitely get one of these cards. I don't know why so many reviewers are biased against Nvida. Maybe they all read Semi-Accurate? Once the REAL word gets out on these cards, they'll be even tougher to find!
Same deal here. No heat issues, fan is not loud and a 100 mhz overclock on core with no tweaking other than forcing fan at 70% is very good. Looks as if these chips are capable of a lot more and that NV had to scale back due to the TDP standards.

That's good nekro, but you're still missing the point. Q's point was about the ambient temps in his office, which you clearly ignored in your hypersensitive venture to defend your 480.

There's no way to get around the power consumption of the 480. It consumes more power than any other single GPU card that Nvidia has put out. Ever. Therefore, even if the fan is good enough to keep the GPU itself cool, that heat has to travel somewhere. And where will it travel? Into Q's office.

Maybe if you actually thought these things out instead of flinging personal attacks you'd avoid looking "silly" yourself.

My 470 stock idle in a closed SilverStone case with all system fans on low.

I tried 2 hours of Crysis all VH @ 1920x1200 stock last night to establish a baseline for temps. In a closed case with system fans on low and the GPU fan @ auto I hit 85C. The fan went up to 53%. Tonight I am going to run my OC with 65% fan speed set manually and see what happens. This weekend the stock TIM is going to be replaced with Shin-etsu. Usually the factory applies too much and uses a rather standard grade.

The GTX 470s fan is loud at high levels and I haven't had use it @ that level yet.

My fans never hit 70% I guess that's why I don't here to much noise, my temps hover around mid to low 80s.
