Default vdpau (or glx, actually?): poor performance

hi everyone

i'm quite surprised by the response of the vdpau-enabled driver on ion le in combination with mplayer and lucid, since the reproduction of the same movies under windows xp with purevideo/mpc hc is completely flawless.

there must be a mistake somewhere, but i cannot find where.

basically i'm getting sluggish performance from video reproduction at 1080p.

it happens with every movie with sufficient bitrate, and it's not the cpu's (atom n270) fault since it's very underloaded (under 33% most of the time, it actually falls back to 800Mhz from time to time during reproduction).

can you help me finding the reason of the problem and possibly a solution?

i rather detest being forced to windows and i'd prefer a linux desktop (the quality of the linux driver was actually was one of the main reason for buying nvidia hardware instead of the other brands)


i'm attaching trace + mplayer output (the message about the codec failing is present in certain cases and missing elsewhere, but i think that message is the result, not the cause).

i'm using NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.15-pkg1.run , and i tried even to put the current repository debs outside of the loop and manually recompile mplayer from the last revision, but nothing changed performance-wise.

Also, you can achieve the best performance by disabling compiz ("desktop effects"), and disable the X composite extension in your xorg.conf file. This will make VDPAU display code work in a manner much more similar to XP.

thanks, it seems that disabling composite (*), a bit of triple buffering and caching completely resolved the issue; actually now it seems to work better in linux than in windows. i'm keeping an eye on it but seems fine.

thank you again.

(*) a pity though; the ability of zooming the desktop could have been cool and useful too, on such a small screen (netbook)

CORRECTION: disabling composite extension leads to the best results, but even with triple + composite-on the results are not perfect but okay-ish
