Default 195.36.24: GTX 480 SLI Freezing + other issues

While running in SLI mode, X takes a long time to startup, using 100% CPU in the process.

Once it does finally start up, it freezes every time you run a GL application and focus to it, or if you query any nvidia-settings attributes or just by running nvidia-settings it seems. It eventually unfreezes after about 10 seconds until you do it again. The X server can be seen using 100% CPU via SSH while this is happening.

With SLI mode disabled, everything is fine.

Another unrelated issue, is that framebuffer VESA consoles are not restored upon X shutdown with GTX 400 hardware.

One or both issues (if using SLI) should be reproducible for anyone with 400 series hardware.

I reported this same issue in another thread but I didn't see any replies, but since a new driver came out with the same issues, I made my own thread.

Kernel is 2.6.33.1, X.org 1.8.0.
I also notice this:
[ 57231.923] (EE) NVIDIA(0): SLI lock timeout exceeded (type 1)

You may want to search at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ for any similar xserver bugs running SLI and file a ticket.

Gentoo Oddity -

Oh, I've added the "# Broken" part myself. The whole xorg.conf is my own doing.

I've tested with X.org 1.7.6 and its the same issue.
No difference with MSI enabled or disabled either.

I'm pretty sure that SLI is purely based in the NVIDIA driver itself, independent of the X server.

You don't have a dri2 module according to your logs.

The DRI stuff isn't used by the NVIDIA driver.

Any NVIDIA devs around?

The NVIDIA driver loads up the dri2 submodule so that it can tell the DRI2 extension the name of the VDPAU driver:
Quote:
[ 57236.379] (II) Loading sub module "dri2"
[ 57236.379] (II) LoadModule: "dri2"
[ 57236.379] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module dri2
[ 57236.379] (II) UnloadModule: "dri2"
[ 57236.379] (EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 57236.379] (II) NVIDIA(0): The X server will not be able to send the VDPAU driver name to
[ 57236.379] (II) NVIDIA(0): libvdpau.
Failing to load it shouldn't affect anything else (including VDPAU -- currently it defaults to "nvidia" if it can't talk to DRI2).

As for the SLI lock timeout problem, please try unplugging and reconnecting the SLI bridge. If you have another bridge you can try, that might be a worthwhile experiment.

If you do not have another bridge, it would be interesting to know if the problem reproduces with lower-resolution modes. Are you using a flexible or a rigid bridge?

Using a Flexible bridge currently. I have no problems in Windows at all. SLI enables just fine and I get the full performance out of the cards.

Would this have anything to do with all the freezing too? Its unusable currently. I'm guessing this isn't reproducible in your labs.

I'll try another resolution and a rigid SLI bridge and see what happens.

Default Re: 195.36.24: GTX 480 SLI Freezing + other issues

Okay, I tried 3 different SLI bridges (rigid and flexi) and they all do the same thing. Freezing X, etc.
I get the SLI lock timeout exceeded everytime, no matter where the bridge is plugged on the first or second fingers.

Finally, I decided to removed the SLI bridge, and now X starts up in SLI mode, no hanging and freezing, or anything of the sort. It works fine, but I know without the bridge this isn't optimal. The SLI lock message is gone from the logs too.

Any ideas?
I know it works fine with the bridge in Windows.

Thanks, Spyke. That helps eliminate some of the possible hardware problems and points toward it being a software problem. We'll try to see if we can reproduce the problem here.

Hi Aaron

I am also getting the same problem with SLI enabled, the computer locks up when any 3D applications are launched. Works fine with SLI disabled. SLI mode in Windows works fine with the latest drivers.

I have posted about this before, you can get additional details (logs and all) from this post if you missed it earlier:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=140140

I'm running 2 BFG 7900GTX cards, SLI in Linux was working fine prior to the 185.x drivers.

I'm glad you are looking into this, hopefully Spyke, myself and others experiencing this issue will have working SLI systems again soon

Thanks
Slava

Can you disconnect the SLI bridge and see if that helps anything? If it does then its the same problem.
SLI will still enable without the bridge installed, but with reduced performance. (as expected)

I find it interesting that 7900GTX cards would be affected too.

I'm unable to test with 185 series drivers as GTX 480's are brand new cards.
