Default 195.36.15: Unigine tests freezing X on 8800GT SLI with newest drivers

Hello!

Today I finally got my second 8800GT card installed to my system and all settings configured. Unfortunately, my joy didn't last long, as after solving the issue with both kmalloc and overheating problems due to the NVIDIA driver not spinning up the fan on other card, I faced the problem I wasn't able to solve.

To test my rig I launched the Unigine tests -- Heaven and Tropics. Quite soon I saw that this led to my X freezing up. My mouse cursor would move but nothing else gets updated on the screen. After a while it might again run for some seconds, then freeze again. It's possible to ssh in, and if the tests are killed soon enough (before the third freeze in a row) the control of X returns after a short amount of time.

If I go to check DMESG, I find these:

Code:
[ 404.517576] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00005097 00000680 0080027 00000100
[ 417.883918] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00005097 000015e0 00000000 0000100
[ 431.507992] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00005097 00000680 000700b4 0000100
[ 604.991138] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00005097 00000680 00030052 0000100
[ 648.393519] NVRM: Xid (0002:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00005097 00000680 000100ea 0000100
It seems that these errors are connected to my second GPU. However, that's exactly the card I have been running for some time now already, so it's a bit more over suspicions than the one I plugged in today.

As the topic tells, I'm running the newest NVIDIA drivers. Xorg-server is 1.7.6 and kernel 2.6.32. I'm running Gentoo.

Any ideas? I have checked and tested most of the things listed in the sticky.

After doing some reading I realised that this might be caused by the differing GPU clock speeds in my 8800GTs. I had read that the faster card would underclock to match the speed of the lower card, but apparently this requires that the slower card is in the first PCI-E slot. After I have acquired a long enough SLI-flex cable to go over the Accelero S1 that's on my slower card, I'll post again on whether or not this issue has gone away.

Okay, I switched the cards. Result: still freezing.

However, I noticed one thing I didn't mention last time: When "AFR" or "On" is selected in X11 configuration, the program draws the frames with very big difference in time: it is as if the other card is drawing something either very much later or earlier than the other card. This continues for some time, after which the freeze comes and in the messages there is an error.

The cards I have in my system are as follows:

Primary slot: Asus EN8800GT/G/HTDP/512M
Quote:
Graphics Engine NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT
Bus Standard PCI Express 2.0
Video Memory DDR3 512MB
Engine Clock 600 MHz
Memory Clock 1.8 GHz ( 900 MHz DDR3 )
Memory Interface 256-bit
Secondary slot: WinFast PX8800 GT GTB

GPU NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Graphics Bus PCI Express 2.0
Memory size 512MB GDDR3
GPU/Memory clock 680/900MHz
Memory data rate 1800MHz
Memory Interface 256-bit

Now this is rather curious. This problem doesn't arise with every opengl program. SLI works well with, for example, Sauerbraten (which is the second gpu hungry program after the unigine tests installed on my system). I can turn all settings on and get good performance, no problems at all. Also, it seems that the "Xid 13" errors I wrote about in the first message are always connected to the card installed in the secondary slot: after switching the cards I'm seeing the same errors:
