Stephen, what about what you mentioned earlier about possible driver paths being the root cause of the problem? I've never believed myth was the problem since I don't even use it, but also not sure how to create the system freeze here since it's random. I'd still consider sending you my box (not to keep however!) if it will help. I have some free time this weekend and can see if I can close in on a way to trigger it here. I also can installed netconsole, which I haven't tried because the other guy in this thread said he was going to do it.

piotro,

For me, MythNews was refreshing the news display even when I entered/exited it roughly every minute (at least, the "last updated" field on the screen would be constant for about 30 minutes, then jump to the current time, then stay constant for 30 minutes etc.)

My MythTV installation is from the Ubuntu repositories (on 32-bit Karmic) with a few PPAs:

I'm fully up-to-date from those sources except that there appears to be a new kernel and libc available today.

If you can get netconsole working, that's the most likely thing to help; hopefully, that should capture any kernel panic which will point the finger at something...

Right.
It looks like my english isn't good enough to tell what head is thinking....
btw: Did You use rss sites list which I'm attached in Mythbug report ?
I'm asking as my freeze is highly dependent on it.

Behavior of "last updated" files is as it should be and basically shows that Your system has NewsUpdateFrequency = 30min.

Why NewsUpdateFrequency may matter ?

At every MythNews enter, code checks timestamp of last rss feed and if it is > than NewsUpdateFrequency - myth feeds rss. So if You launch every minute and there was 25 launches - there was only 1 or 0 rss feeds and 25 refreshes of cached news.

Some time ago I launch my test script for 24h for testing MythNews (enter, down, down, left, down,up,up,exit). 1200 cycles and all OK.
Despite that, this exactly system freezes avg once per week/two when regularly used. So it looks like system usage history is a trigger for bug and bug just manifest in MythNews.

What is difference between (A)1200 cycles in 24 hours and (B)weak normal usage:
-A hasn't any other myth activities (video, music, etc), B- has
-A has less network access (max 48), B stressed by me had 50 or more

So next thing to check is:
1.usage history impact
2.net access impact

For 2 I'm rather skeptic as 48 and 50 are the same order - but it is worth to be sure - so thats why I'm suggesting You just to verify this.

So now option 1 left. Well...
Ideally will be to launch script which launch playback and mythnews in circle for 20-40h and try catch hang. Strange is that You have stability problem with myth remote control. For me it is stable as should (never triggered segfault in years, used every 5 min by i.e script showing incoming mails via osd).

Anyway - I will try again catch it with verbose logging in mythfrontend over NFS.

EDIT 11/06:
After few days of tests: launching MythNews with period longer than 30min - almost every launch (usually first, 2nd or 3rd) gives hard lock. RSS site set causing hardlocks attached.

Hello,

I am experiencing the same problems as the thread-opener. Just bought the Foxconn NetBox nt330i and set it up to netboot ArchLinux and run the mythfrontend.
Everything is working great, when not using VDPAU.

With VDPAU enabled, I am experiencing the said hard-locks, when forwarding or rewinding. Playback runs well, skipping backwards always leads to a hard-lock. Skipping forward works once or twice, then hangs.
Sadly there is no logs of what happens when the hard-lock occurs.

The RAM installed is 2Gb, makes the iGUP RAM 256MB.

When the system hangs, the fan starts speeding up after some time.

Code:
uname -r
2.6.34-ARCH

Nvidia driver version is: Linux-x86-256.44

Since playback of HD content was the reason I bought that thing, this problem renders the device nearly useless. I really hope, that there is a solution to this.

Greetings from Germany

Felix

MainUser, Unfortunately, NVIDIA hasn't been able to reproduce this problem, and hence it's very difficult to even speculate what the cause is.

Are you able to set up a serial console or "netconsole" on your system. It's possible such techniques may capture some information about the hang, which could lead to a solution.

Thanks.

From my first hand experience 256MiB gfx RAM is too low for VDPAU for HD content.
I could play it only on a X screen without any Window Manager and without any Desktop Environment (second separate X screen). But I was able to do this with MPlayer no-gui only. Didn't done it with Myth or XBMC so I don't know whatever it is possible with them.

So... before you start to search for software solution you need more iGPU RAM

I have a bit more information regarding this issue, as it affects the Foxconn box. In my attempt to set up a distro I could send to nVidia to test with, I created a MythDora installation on a 4 Gb SDHC card.

If I play a video file that is local to the machine, either in RAM or on the SD card, I can seek just fine and cannot reproduce the lockup after several minutes of testing.

However, if I NFS-mount a remote partition (hard-wired, gigabit Ethernet) and attempt to play the exact same video file, the lockup occurs. This suggests to me that the problem lies in an interaction between the Ethernet port or driver and the nVidia video hardware or driver.

Stephen, in your testing, were you playing a local file or one accessed over a wired network? If network, was it gigabit?

Yes, I most probably was playing over an NFS mount over GigE. I do have a few files local to the ION machine, but I don't think I was using them in that test. Still, there may be other factors (e.g. other traffic on the network, timing, bug-fixes in kernel Ethernet driver, ...)

OK, I'll still work toward sending you a MythDora disk image you can copy to a card or small HD. I'm having some trouble getting it to boot entirely correctly.

I have the same machine and have the exact same issue as MainUser posted.

There are also a few members on the MythTV userlist that have the issue.

I have not tried playing a local file since the point of the machine was to play via mythtv and the networked files.

I find it odd that NVidia cannot reproduce this. all it takes is a remote mythtv backend to connect to and an attempt to play any video format VDPAU is capable of accelerating.

Okay, so one big flaw in these ION boards is lack of a bus serial port.

Do any of them have PCI or PCIe slots? If so, then a PCI(e)-serial adapter ($15 on eBay) could be used for the Linux console, and this issue would then be much much easier and quicker to diagnose and repair.

I don't have an ION system here yet. I was thinking of getting one this month, but this bug has definitely changed those plans.

Cheers

It appears that some of these systems have an Atheros ethernet controller, which is defaulting to using MSI for interrupts. Normally that's a good thing, but sometimes it results in unexpected problems.

Have you folks tried booting with this Linux kernel parameter:

pci=nomsi

?? Does it make any difference?
