9600GT Noise and Fan Control

Hi all,

In my HTPC I have a 9600GT. It runs MythTV and little else. However, the card is somewhat noisy. While I have unearthed the option in nvidia-settings to lower the fan speed it seems to be a permanent thing: if I set it at 40% it stays at 40%.

Is it possible to 'shift' the fan speed, or, even better, to define a target temperature (so keep it 10C from being unhappy). I ask as the card idles at a much lower temperature than it need be.
