Yes, it seems to be true after some debate about it. Valve taking on Linux programmers seems to have born out a native Steam client.
Just for you whom may think what games can run on Linux. The Source Engine can use OpenGL and had it running in early versions of Half Life 2. Source http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...ement&num=1%22 Last edited by Sean_W; 05-12-10 at 03:49 PM. Reason: Update |

The only difference being steam will call the wine process(if you can set it up that way) for you to play the nonnative Linux games instead of steam working within the wine process itself like we do now.
Remember, Steam is just a 'content distribution system' and has nothing to do with what game studios produce and/or have a certain compatibile binary system for. |

No. The word is it will be native and not some WINE wrapper and it even says that in the link.
You shouldn't need WINE at all because the Source Engine games will use OpenGL. |

There is no suggestion of running non-native games through Steam.

Anyway it is a step in the right direction...
PS. In the linked article refers also to the Source engine that will be ported too. This means that the Source engine-using games will be Linux native ones. |

It better be native. WINE performance sucks.

It doesn't matter really if you set the app launcher to 'env WINEPREFIX="/home/foo/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\whateverapp'". Steam in this case is agnostic to how things happen beyond its own process.

Indeed, since some apps performs better with WINE, than with winblows. Pretty impressive achievement by a reverse engineered re-implementation of another (poorly documented) OS' system libraries.

What crack are you smoking? I'm all for linux, don't get me wrong. But WINE performance is HORRIBLE compared to Windows native performance. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to get out of the Windows world but gaming has always kept me away from using Linux full time. No AA/AF and the frame rate is just awful. |
