Another distro release but this time it's Fedora. This is a user friendly distro that is FOSS and upstream based so you'll have to get your proprietary software from rpmfusion http://rpmfusion.org/
Fedora is more a cutting edge distro. You can enable the experimental Btrfs(an experimental new filesystem with backup snapshot support) from the DVD(not enabled by default). Fedora comes with experimental 3D support(not enabled by default) for various NVIDIA cards. Fedora(Redhat) contribute a lot to upstream development. I'm really surprised there isn't a comment yet. I've been playing around with Fedora 12 again recently, and it's much better than FC6. Stuff seems like it's coming together. The better package manager makes it a lot easier to install applications, the menu layout is better. There are still some hurdles when going from Windows to Fedora, but it seems a lot easier to find stuff now.
I was going to test an upgrade, but it doesn't look like I can do it because of the boot volume being too small. I could try an upgrade via yum and see if that works though. |

Indeed, it's a good distro. If anyone needs help in installing proprietary software like the NVIDIA driver or Flash, just ask me, since I can make it simple for you.

Are you referring to Yum Extender or did they finally make a proper package manager?

I have always had trouble with the nvidia drivers released from nvidia getting past the boot and/or login screens. Eventually I get them to work, but have resorted to waiting for those who compile the drivers to release the fixes on rpmfusion so I can install them that way.
I have waited for that to happen, but am getting impatient, so am asking for help/advice as you offered someone else. I have kmod-nvidia installed which installs the rpm for the 195.36.24 version of nvidia drivers. I have read that the 200 series drivers have fixed the HDMI sound issue I have where I get picture but no sound on my HDMI output. I have always had other graphics issues when I install the non 190 series drivers, but am willing to try anything at this point. Since it has been a while since I installed the drivers from the nvidia site, I would like some advice. I am using Fedora 13. |

Code:
yum groupinstall Development Tools Code:
chmod a+x "NVIDIAinstallername" Don't reboot during this process and if the display doesn't start, look in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and see if the "Section Device" line still says "nvidia". If for whatever reason you cannot get this to work then don't reboot because you have the Nouveau driver blacklisted. Reinstall the rpmfusion drivers from the TTY. If unsure of the package names, type Code:
yum search nvidia |

Then run this command. Just paste it into the terminal. Code:
su - sed -i '/root=/s|$| rdblacklist=nouveau|' /boot/grub/grub.conf mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r) |

I prefer to install the nVidia proprietary driver, always had better luck with it.
