Question GeForce FX 5200, DVI, 1920x1080, Linux

Hi All,

I recently purchased a Sparkle GeForce FX 5200 and have been trying to get it to display in 1920x1080 under Vector Linux 5.8.

I have tried the following

(1) Four new Samsung monitors 23, 21, 24 and 27 (I'm currently at 27")
(2) Replaced the video card (based on recommendation from Sparkle that the DVI connector may be bad)
(3) Tried the video card in Windows 2000
(4) Tried all versions of the nVidia drivers including Sparkles' and the default nv Linux driver.

I can get 1980x1020 no problem with VGA, but with DVI can only achieve 1440x900.

I know there has been a lot of discussion about this card but I have not seen a definitive answer. Is there a way to get 1980x1020 with DVI and Linux or should I just move on.

Regards,
Dan

you said you tried win2k.
What was the result there? Could you display in 1080p?

Are you sure the DVI port is dual link and can support such a resolution? Are you siure your cable is? Your experiments so far point to a single link DVI port (max of 1440x900).

I'm not sure about the dual versus single link port, I read the documentation and the card is supposed to support 1920x1080 (this was even said by the Sparkle tech support).

I think for the time I spend so far I'm just going to simply upgrade to a 6200LE, it seems people have had much better luck with this card.

With Win2K I could only get 1600x1200.

Based on everything I read on this forum I return the Sparkle FX 5200 card and replaced it with a PNY nVidia 6200 512MB.

I installed the 195.36.24 nVidia drivers and right and have 1920x1080 using the DVI cable with absolutely no fiddling.
