Default GT 240 Fan noise terrible

Hello Guys

Just installed a GT 240 in my Mythbox to discover horrible noise coming from the fan . Even though nvidia control panel says 40% , speed must be a full 100% . Looks like it is a known issue which is still there in 195.36.24 drivers . Has anyone tried the beta drivers on 256.29 ? Is there a fix for the deafening fan roar there ?

Best Regards
Milorad

Hello Guys,

I have just now upgraded to latest nvidia certified linux drivers 195.36.31 , and fan noise is still there , fan running at full speed . With my gigabyte gt 240 it sounds like a jet taking off , might have to put a couple of bricks on the mythbox so it does not fly off .

Best Regards

The card that I have is a Gigabyte GV-N240OC-1GI . I wonder if it is going to be dangerous for the card if I disconnected the fan ? Until nvidia releases the fix for the fan . The card has a reasonable sized heatsink , and I only use it for VDPAU in the mythbox - so no gaming loads .

I have no fan issues with my GT240. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125304

Not with 256.29, nor did I have any issues with 195.36.24.

There is no 195.36.31 that I see for Linux (see this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=122606 ).. is that a Windows driver version?

Hello ,

The thread with the latest releases has not been updated yet by the look of it . But if you go to the Nvidia download page and look under linux , you will find .31 listed there .

Our cards are fairly similar , only difference is I have 1 GB of DDR5 and the card is slightly overclocked - by gigabyte . Also my is a 2 slot wide . My fan noise is so loud that it is making my myth box almost unusable . Can not hear the dialogue above the fan noise unless I turn up the volume above the normal level . Could it be a gygabyte thing ? However it looks like it is happening to other people as well - here : http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...=142020&page=6

Thought the card was faulty and sent it back . The shop tested the card compared against another one - new from the box . Conclusion was card not faulty . Maybe Gigabyte design for this particular card is not working well with present linux driver . I shows 40% fan speed in the control panel but I can not hear any speed reduction taking place .

Best Regards
Milorad

PS
Will have to seek a interim solution outside nvidia/gigabyte

How many pins are there on your fan connector? I noticed mine only has 2 pins, can it still be controlled? It's a ASUS GeForce GT 240 1GB PhysX CUDA DDR3, I cant live with the noise so I'm considering buying a new card unless I get a solution very fast. Does anyone know a similar card where the fan speed control actually works under linux, not fanless card.
