I currently have a PC with Core 2 Quad Q8200, 4 GB DDR2 RAM and a 7900 GS video card. Since Starcraft 2 is coming, I plan to upgrade the video card so the game would run better.
My question is if I upgrade my video card to a GTX470 and leave everything else intact would it be seriously underused because the CPU and the RAM are not the latest generation of hardware? Thanks for any input! |

I seriously think that your C2Q will still be your bottleneck. Can you get a faster CPU? What O/S are you running?

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit
I also should've mentioned this in the first post. I also have an Asus P5Q SE motherboard |

Ideally, you'd want a Core i7 for a GTX 4xx card. Based on the video card you have right now, though, you will see a massive improvement with a 470 and your current processor. It will be even greater if you overclock your CPU.

Are you willing to overclock?
I went from a C2D E8500 @ 3.8Ghz + HD 4870 512 mb to a Phenom 2 BE955 @ 3.6 + a 470, and the difference is very noticeable, huge in some games. I have no idea what your budget is, but I would grab the 470, test with the C2Q at stock settings, then again with a nice overclock, and note the difference. If the overclock shows huge gains, you know you'll benefit from a faster proc. If not, save your money. I don't have info available as I'm at work, but the 400Mhz oc on my proc gave me some reasonably decent gains. |

thank you for all your input guys.
I don't have a huge budget here. If I'm really going to upgrade everything, I'd probably take the Core i5 750 and upgrade all of the RAMs to DDR3. Some benchmark results I saw indicate the Core i5 is a huge improvement over the Q8200 but in others they said the difference is minimal. Anyone has a Core i5? |

Yes the Q8200 is the bottleneck but if you can overclock it you'll be fine. You are coming from a 7900 GS you will see a huge boost in performance and should be able to play Starcraft II maxed out maybe even without overclocking (might have some issues when there's a lot of units on screen and might have to turn down the physics setting). If you're looking to spend less money and don't need all the power (and heat) of a 470 you might want to go with the GTX 460 that should be coming out in July.
