<--------8800GTX SLi, and lovin' it.

I'm anticipating to be living in my new trailer within a few months- so the 8800s have to go in place of a more power efficient card. Hence why I'm looking to ATi this round.

However, if there's rumor of an ATi refresh, or the new gen from ATi is just months away... I may just hang on to these 8800s for a tad bit longer.

88's in SLI are a different story though...it's cool I'm not criticizing people for their choices, but just trying to explain why me or others would want all this power.

I bought Lee's 480. One of the best purchases I've made. Runs cooler than 280's in SLI, and more powerful.

I'm only waiting because of the fact that I'm still on a 22" (1680x1050) and any sort of SLI setup would require a new motherboard.

I'm fairly confident (as long as I get the job I'm looking at) that when I graduate from college I'll be grabbing a 30" monitor at which point this 285 won't be able to cut it anymore. This rig will be retired in its entirety as a folding / file / game / media server and I'll be getting a whole new one

It'll be nice.... I've been using the same case since 2003 (Chieftec Dragon ripoff). It's been long overdue for a refresh. With any luck that'll be just at the end of the 480's life and the 5 (or 6) series will be coming out.... I doubt it'll come out so soon but I do expect to atleast grab the newest 480 refresh or possibly just hold onto the 285 for as long as I can until the newest gen hits

I'll hang tight to my GTX275 till I see what crysis 2 and rage look like as far as benchmarks with various cards. Aside from metro, there aren't enough games that IMO demand more than a 275/285.

The GTX 460 is a revised version ,the only other card that may come out is a GTX 460 x 2 with all of it shaders enable 384.I hear it should be clocked around 700 to 750 and 4000 on the memory and have two gigs of memory You can almost bet if they do come out with a
GX2 460 that is will be just a little faster then the HD5890 so they can take back the lead in top card.Occoarse this is just a rummor. But I look for it .And any really new cards from nvidia more then likely will no be out until next year.

There's not a 480 refresh is there...nope...hoping for a 485 or something of that nature, whatever the next card is.

Really new parts from either Nvidia or ATI will only happen once the bulk 28nm fab process is available sometime next year, and let's put it into perspective here:

GF100 has about 3 billion transistors with a 530mm^ die size at 40nm,so at 28nm,and assuming whatever high end GPU Nvidia releases next at 28nm is also at that same 530mm^ size, and also has roughly the same ratio between logic and cache as the GF100,the 28nm version will have roughly 4.8 billion transistors.

Ati's next GPU,if it stays the same physical size as the current cypress right now at 344mm^,but built at 28nm and keeping within the same guidelines as for the GF100,it'll have about 3.4 billion transistors.

In either case, the transistor budget increase is well over 1 billion transistors,so it'll either allow to make already existing features much more powerfull,or add new features to the architecture(seems DX11.1 is coming),so for large performance and feature support increase, the 28nm fab process is what's needed for both Nvidia and ATI.

Whatever features are going to be added with 40nm refresh parts from Nvidia, given that it's current GF100 is already large at 40nm,might simply resume to having all shaders enabled(512),running at faster clocks and also using faster GDDR 5 memory, while still staying at or preferably below that of the current GTX480 cards in terms of power consumption.

ATI has a biit more flexibility since their current cypress is quite a bit smaller(344mm^),and uses less power too,so these upcoming southern islands parts are more of a wildcard, but rumors to suggest it might be using a 384 bit memory bus, with the attendant increase in memory bandwith and extra memory onboard the cards....we'll see in 3~4 months from now.

I'll buy a 470/480 when they are under $200. So...a couple more weeks.

My previous post is a lie. I was going to wait until a refresh or the next gen but a sweet deal on a GTX 470 really speed up my decision. $300 shipped with a free game was too good to pass up. I only paid $40 for this upgrade and if you count the cost of Resident Evil 5 I actually didn't pay anything for a jump from a 285 / 9800 gtx to a single gtx 470. Granted.... I did lose a bit of performance in Physx games, but that's really of no concern at all to me.

I am playing Dirt 2 on XP in DX9 in 1080p with AA and I really see no reason tu put 6 times more expensive graphic card to have barelely visible uber-bitched DX11 effects
