Default Is there something specific to make me choose a new gpu?

Or should i go solely based on benchmarks?

Seriously, I've been trying to choose between the 480 and 5870 for two weeks now, but everywhere it's just fps and temp.

Now obviously fps are most important, temp too, and if I go by that then I should go for the 480 (performance over temps), but the difference is not heaven and hell. So I find myself wondering about picture quality, features and drivers. And since I have had nothing but good experience with Nv and Ati, both these cards are about equal, and none of them really offer something to write home about (in the long run) besides performance, then I should take the 5870 as it is cheaper.

I respect most of you users here on the news, so help a fellow nerd out.

GTX 480:

Pros:

Higher performance
more features (CUDA/Physx)
Better (subjective) driver support
Better tesselation performance

Cons:

High power usage
High heat output
No support for 3 monitors without SLI
Expensive: $500

HD 5870:

Pros:

Lower heat output
Lower power usage
Native 3 monitor support (6 monitors with 5870 Eyefinity 6 model)
Additional monitors with each card in Crossfire.
Support for ATI stream
Cheaper: $370-400

Cons:

Lower performance
Worse (subjective) driver support

Both cards have:

OpenCL support
Direct X 11
OpenGL 4.0
Onboard HD video decoder (supported in ATI's Cat 10.6 driver)

That's a basic list. Remember that the GTX 480 uses A LOT more power than the HD 5870 but only produces 10-15% more performance overall.

I chose the 5870, and I haven't been disappointed yet. If you want to use 3 or more monitors, the 5870 is a no-brainer. If you only use 1 or 2 monitors, take your pick. You really can't go wrong with either of them.

Madpistol,

I agree with most of what you wrote, I will add that coming from Red to Green again, that the drivers ARE THE REASON I switched to a GTX480.

I will add that heat and power consumption gave me some trepidations but now living with it for better than a month and having use both that Iam much happier with the 480.

No support for three monitors without SLI isn't really a con. You aren't going to be able to play modern games with three monitors unless you use SLI or CF anyway, so the fact that a single Ati card can push three monitors is only a plus while you are sitting at your desktop...for gaming it's pretty much irrelevant. Even further, if you do decide to go CF, Eyefinity issues are common and there is still no 3D if you choose to go that route.

The only pro I see to Ati's multi-monitor support over Nvidia's is that Nvidia can't seem to work out their idle clock issues and that keeps the temps higher with multi-monitor setups than with just one monitor.

Lovin my 5870, and the fact I got it for $300 makes it an even better deal.

One more question: Will it work well with a q6600 @ 3.2? Or is that cpu already too weak for that card?

I have both 2 HD5870 and 2 GTX470 ,while the HD5870 is fast and will play any game you want ,I just like the control pannel better on the GTX 470 ,plus the GTX 470 easily clocks to speeds faster then the HD5870 in nearly evre game.Plus if you look around you can find good deals on the GTX 470 ,I bought two MSI GTX 470 on sale for $560,I thought about a GTX 480 but at the time all of them were around $500 and I thought for $60 more I could have a GTX 470 SLI set up and it would be faster then one GTX 480.Both my cards will do 800/3800 in sli at default voltages, which makes it faster then my HD5870CF setup.I glad I did ,I kept hearing how loud the fan was and how hot it runs ,the fan does'nt really get noisesy until after 70%,and so far playing games the hottest it has got is 78c which is'nt bad.If you had a GTX 260,280,295 then the fan noise will be no problem.I have yet to see how high I can go with the extra voltage ,right now default is just fine.
