The ragjij guy makes very good points and the Athlon II is a good cpu for the money and Tom's is sorta right, do u really need more than that to gamer.

I got 5 rigs now and all of em play games fine even the Pentium D for XP runs UT3 fine with crossfilre enabled.

And GTA isn't an unreal based game shovs.

Great article.

When I built this current rig I was stoked and looking forward to the performance gains I would see with a GTX470/i7 over a Q9400/GTX260.... if I turn fraps off and just enjoy the game I'm playing I would have to say 98% of the time this new rig was a complete waste of money.

I really think that if more people realized that it doesn't have to cost $2500 to build a computer and play the newest PC games it would be very beneficial for the PC Gaming industry as a whole. Unfortunately the really big expensive rigs take the majority of the spot light over really great performing rigs that come in at really great prices and it seems to perpetuate many people having a poor attitude towards PC gaming

It all has to do with what resolution your screen is, and how much aliasing you are willing to deal with. If you don't mind turning the settings down a notch, then sure a less powerful cpu and gpu are more than enough to play just about any game.

I havnt seen any reason to upgrade my cpu since I got it. Any and all large bottle necks in gaming now will be my gpu.

I do CPU upgrades mainly for video encoding, thats why I might get X6 soon to replace my AhtlonX4.

H264 encoding in 2 pass high quality can take quite a bit of time.

Sure, the Athlon II x3 440 is a good little chip, no doubt about it, but I still would not use it for gaming in my system.

AMD's x6 chips are not wildly expensive and are certainly much cheaper than anything you could plug into an x58 motherboard (and most chips worth having for a p55 motherboard).

So, unless your home is a cardboard box and your car is a supermarket trolley, why settle for less?
