I tried to reproduce Mr_Maniac's problem(s) with a Palit GeForce GTX 460 today, but was unable to. I only had the 768MB version to work with, however, which may be significant. I'll have to see if I can get a hold of a 1GB GF104 board.

@ashling: can you please generate/attach an nvidia-bug-report.log file?

I have attached my nvidia-bug-report

I seem to have exactly the same card as Mr_Maniac but I do not see a problem (except for some strangely low performance in qvdpautest).

I am experiencing the same problems as described above. "top" reports 100% CPU usage from X. Logging in via ssh still worked which allowed me to shut down properly. The 195.36.31 driver works fine, but it seems to have trouble using the correct performance mode (dual monitor setup, always in high performance mode).

I am using x11-base/xorg-x11-7.4 and x11-base/xorg-server-1.7.6.

Is there anyone with xorg server 1.8.x who has the problem or with xorg-server 1.7.x who does not have the problem?

@spectre4: can you please generate/attach an nvidia-bug-report.log file? I doubt the X server version is significant in this case.

I now also experienced the problem. X freezes (except for the mouse) and uses 100% cpu. The rest of the machine is still running, so I generated a new bug report via ssh. After that I killed and restarted X, works again without reboot.
So it seems to happen everywhere, but with varying frequency.

Yeah, I still haven't figured out how to reproduce the freeze. My system hangs sometimes after 5 minutes, my record is about 3 hours without a freeze.

I just got an MSI GTX 460 1 GB and briefly had a Palit GTX 460 1GB (which worked, but which I sent back because the heat sink/fan was considerably inferior to the Palit cards that reviewers got). Both cards work fine in Windows, but in Linux only 2D works reliably. Triggering 3D with anything including compositing leads to a condition where video is still displayed, media that was playing continues, the mouse cursor is vsible and can be moved around, but almost nothing responds to any other input. This is on Arch Linux with kernel 2.6.34.1 or 2.6.35-rc6, Xorg server 1.8.1.902, and Nvidia binary driver 256.35. I can change to a console via Ctrl-Alt-(F1-F6) and kill or restart the X display manager, after which things work again for a while. The only way to avoid the problem is to avoid 3D entirely.
