Default Console shows up at bottom of screen after logging out of X

I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04. I want to be able to start and stop X from the console. However, after installing the drivers (not sure what version. I did it through the hardware driver gui and it lists it as version current), when I log out of X to return to the text only console, the console shows up at the bottom, with only the top few lines of text viewable at the bottom of the screen. If it means anything, after I installed the drivers I had some trouble getting the console resolution to show up at the native 1680x1050. To fix it, I added set gfxpayload=keep after gfxmode=${GRUB_GFXMODE} in /etc/grub.d/00_header. Before doing this fix, the console would show up at the lowest resolution, but would not have the problem above. Any ideas on how to fix this? Please let me know if I have to provide anymore information.
Thanks!

Has anyone been able to run the console and X w/ Nvidia drivers successfully?
