It's surprisingly a fun game, lol.
I had my doubts, but it's sort of like L4D from an over the top perspective, the menu and help hints and all that is exactly the same.

Also, this is like WI_Net, so be warned if you will.. there are no dedicated servers. It's not like L4D where you join a server. I noticed this when I had 5 ping, and everyone else had like 70's..

Anyways, you should definitely try it. Before I knew it, I had played 74 minutes.. I would have played more but I want to try out my TF2 hat that I got cause of this.

Just got back from a coop match and damn is this game addictive! Not to mention challenging. At some point i think its even more challenging than L4D.

I like this game.

Runs great on a low budget rig I'm building for a friend as well... Phenom 8600B @ 2.5ghz, HD 4830 @ 685/1900, all settings @ highest, 2xAA/4xAF, 40fps.

You all know that the reason they are doing this is because they are gonna announce a retail better version of it, right?

Valve never does things out of the kindness of their hearts.

It´d be a strange move by a company to give things away left and right, for sure.

But where does releasing the source code fit into that theory?
Maybe selling campaigns and expansion DLC stuff, but with the source code and the tools out there, you get the Oblivion Horse armor situation where modders can just replicate whatever they do for free.

Infact, back in the day when it was called Alien Swarm: Infested and was still under the Black Cat name, they said it would be a free mod for HL2 owners and a standalone game purchase for those who didnt own HL2. (ie you pay for a HL2 engine license without the HL2 game content, I suppose, like they did with the retail Counter-strike 1.6 back when).

Chances are the Source Mod was nearly done (Alien Swarm: Infested was announced as a Source version of the UT2K4 mod even before HL2 was released as I recall), and they just let the crew put the finish on it and release it as was planned before they started work at Valve.
So it wont have been any real cost of development for valve as such.

The base game will probably be released for free. But future campaigns, maps, DLC will most likely be paid.

Then again it also depends on how popular the game is. If you dont want them to start "selling" DLCs then everyone should be boycotting this game.

Of course they are. It's like a full game "demo". If it's successful, you can bet your ass they will release a newer game with more maps/features/gameplay modes for a price.

To be honest, I like this system. Now I can see if I enjoy the game mechanics first. It makes me much more confident when dropping $40+ on a game.

Just ran through it on hard with some friends, great stuff.
With just one campaign it sorta feels a bit like a framework, hopefully there is still a community around AS since the original mod ready to start pumping out stuff.
