Well, 320x240 is actually for depth sensing (monochrome video streaming). Kinect has two cameras while Playstation Move has one camera.

Quote:
According to information supplied to retailers, the Kinect sensor outputs video at a frame rate of 30 Hz, with the RGB video stream at 32-bit color VGA resolution (640480 pixels), and the monochrome video stream used for depth sensing at 16-bit QVGA resolution (320240 pixels with 65,536 levels of sensitivity). The Kinect sensor has a practical ranging limit of 1.23.5 metres (3.911 ft) distance. The sensor has an angular field of view of 57 horizontally and a 43 vertically, while the motorized pivot is capable of tilting the sensor as much as 27 either up or down. The microphone array features four microphone capsules,[19] and operates with each channel processing 16-bit audio at a sampling rate of 16 kHz.[18]
Kinect still sounds quite powerful and for $99 (assuming since $49 game is bundled), it's not so bad. It makes sense to keep price low, otherwise Kinect would be somewhere in $200+ range with both cameras doing 640x480 and have its own chipset for processing.

I can buy a 10MP camera for under $200, and you're saying three 640x480 cameras would be $200 or more?

Two cameras, not three. Yeah, good luck finding a 10MP camera that reads body and gestures for under $200. :P

I guessed $200 if it was to include 2nd 640x480 camera (instead of 320x240), its own processor and game bundle (maybe $150 or even $200 without). Originally, Kinect was going to have it's own processor but since they downsized 2nd camera to 320x240 they probably see no reason the need extra processor since it uses 10%-5% of XBOX 360's power.

That's not a 10MP video camera now is it?

Ahh good point. As for reading body images, I would think that's mostly algorithms on the computation side.

I think if everyone signed exactly the same way it would be ok, but everyone is slightly different. It would be like General Lee or Redeemed using voice recognition with their redneck and country drawl.

umm, what are you arguing about?

1) 10MP camera would not be required, it only would have to be doubled from 320x240, so 640x480. that is 0.3MP. Full 1080p is only 2MP.

2) a 10MP video camera would give you about 3800x2800 image, so yes, you won't find one.

3) as far as reading body movement, according to that article, a 0.3MP (640x480) camera would be enough, and actual detection is done by software that would be running on RROD_Box

4) webcams with 0.3MP are dirt cheap

but what do you expect from Microsoft gaming division that keeps selling Hard Drives that are 3-5 times higher in price.

and then Bigman comes a long and all RROD_Boxes in the world melt down because of excessive amount of processing required to understand his new form of Enghlisg.

so, yeah, I'm for it

We know they are cheap, but when marketing something, and you make a poor choice, you can turn it around by saying they are making it cheaper for us the consumers, becuase they care.

EDIT: I can just imagine Bigman telling the 360 to 'play moovee shuvs'.

Yeah but depth sensing camera is something special, it does more than regular camera. It can sense the depth between camera to 10+ feet away. I could imagine it can be a bit expensive (including software written for this to come with). It's not that 640x480 is easy to come- it costs money. It's no EyeToy and makes you wonder why EyeToy is still expensive ($99 alone).

This is a good read about Kinect hardware itself if you're interested.

You clearly know nothing. The PS3 Eye is not 100 dollars alone. At all. It is 40 dollars brand new at Gamestop. Probably pick it up even cheaper elsewhere, but I just checked Gamestop real quick. Why are the customers paying for the "expensive" software of the camera? That cost shouldn't be repeating for every camera bought. MS is ripping everybody that buys this thing off, and you seem to be content and almost willing to take it with no lube.

Kung Fu Live does basically everything the Kinect does and all it requires is a 40 dollar camera.

Well I was saying my 10MP camera was cheap, but I wasn't thinking of a video camera. It was just an example. We know it doesn't require that resolution.

Anyways, I thought 640x480 cameras were cheap, like you said.
