Rambus have a market cap of $2.24 billion US dollars. They’re a filthy stinking rich company – but what do they actually make? Well, nothing. Instead, they file and buy patents, subsequently pursuing license agreements on said patents. Last year, Rambus earned US$113 million alone via licensing, and now consummate graphic chip-maker NVIDIA has run afoul of their devious, avaricious ways.

Yesterday, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) found that NVIDIA had infringed on three separate patents owned by Rambus, each related to NVIDIA products containing memory controllers effectively ‘owned’ by Rambus. The ITC then ordered all imported NVIDIA chips banned, a move that will affect computing behemoths such as Hewlett-Packard, ASUSTek, and Biostar.

NVIDIA claims that the three patents in question are invalid, and are appealing the ruling. However, while it’s likely NVIDIA will be able to avoid extensive disruption to its OEM partners, they will probably lose the right to sell their current stock in the US – this will in turn cut into their bottom line, potentially forcing the company to hike up their prices.

Damn Rambus piss me off sometimes. They're like a middle man that does nothing but increase prices for playing their part. Still, the law is the law and if NV did breach the patents then so be it.
