Just got a brand new GTX 460 1GB, and I gotta say...

I'm disappointed with the performance so far.

Specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
Motherboard: ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3
RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 @ 1333MHz
GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 460 1GB OC Edition (using 258.96)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 TRX-750M 750W Modular.

Installation, etc... Went incredible smooth. Everything was going just according to plan, but then when I fired up Battlefield Bad Company 2, I was somewhat disappointed with the performance I was getting from this card (Everything HIGH, AA at x2, AF at x16, VSync ON, HBAO off @ 1600 x 900).

I mean, It's very playable don't get me wrong, but I was expecting A LOT more from this card, In fact, I was getting smoother gameplay from my old Radeon HD 5770 in this game, which is nowhere near the GTX 460 according to every single benchmark out there.

Now, Is there something I'm missing? Is there something I haven't done? like enabling or disabling settings in the NVIDIA control panel? (this is my 1st time using an NVIDIA card since the days of the Geforce TI 4600).

You should be getting close to twice the fps of the 5770 if i understand correctly....

Thanks for the quick reply.

Now, to be honest, I wasn't expecting TWICE the FPS of the 5770 since I game with VSYNC ON, but I was expecting much smoother gameplay (especially with AA enabled). In fact, according to bit-tech.net, the GTX 460's min FPS in BFBC2 is actually higher than the avg FPS of the HD 5770 (when AA is enabled)

Very rarely, maybe once every 10ish or so mp rounds, I get stuttering for like a couple seconds, and then everything goes back to normal. It's a tiny issue, but I think has to do with the game.
Metro 2033 and STALKER ran great. Do you have any other games to try?

I ran some BC2 yesterday and I know what you mean - performance just wasn't that great. My CPU might be getting in the way though. We'll see how things go when I hook up my new 1920x1080 display.

Remember, BC2 loves Quad Cores. If you don't have one, don't expect any GPU to achieve a constant 60fps at any level.

I was complaining about this before and basically everyone told me it was me making it up. Now there are threads on EVGA forums about this, Nvidia forums, BF BC2 forums. Its not the speed, its the smoothness of the gameplay experience.

Its funny how many threads have popped up about this. Oh well, I was first.

EDIT: The developer 259.09 seems to run BF BC2 better. Try them out!

To put it into perspective, the HD 5770 (especially if overclocked) mostly keeps up with HD 5830 in a lot of scenarios, especially at medium resolutions and with medium amounts of AA and AF. And, HD 5830 is about equal with GTX 460 and 465 in most scenarios.

Plus you have the factor of all the "cool" reviews out there sing uber-powerful CPUs with zero CPU limitation going on, allowing the cards to run as wild as they want to. Hey that's cool but does not reflect what most people have, which is rigs more like yours. With a reasonable amount of CPU limitation (using an I5 or 4 core Phenom around 3.2, or 3-core around 3.5) these cards perform even closer, which should be a better known-fact.

You shouldn't have gone from HD 5770 to GTX 460. If you'd have gotten a 470 it'd be a different story for you. You should have researched a little deeper.

I see what you're saying, but It just doesn't make any sense (HD 5770 outperfoming a GTX 460).

I was getting smoother gameplay with my old HD 5770, not similar, but smoother, much smoother.

The only thing that made made the game a little more playable, was setting the DXMode to 10, which IMO is pretty lame.

And it's happening to A LOT of GTX 400 series users out there, just check the EVGA, BFBC2 forums.

I finally got a repro so I am going to pass it on to our dev to look at it. I'll keep you updated on the status. It doesn't look like I will need to borrow your graphics card after all.

The HD5770 is a strong middle range card and the HD5770 does play other games better then the GTX 460,and the GTX 460 plays other games better then the HD5770 .To me the GTX 460 and the HD5770 are about equal in performance .The HD5770 plays some games better and other games the GTX 460 plays better.It could be a driver problem or the HD 5770 plays that game engine better.Does the GTX 460 play all of your other games alright.

From my quick searching on the hd 5770, the increase in performance is only a little, and really not worth plunking down money on. For starters, the 5770 is a dx11 card. Frankly if you bought a midrange dx11 card, you shouldn't be looking at another mid range dx11 card for maybe 2 years. Any upgrades you should consider is either to a high end card, or go SLI.
