In my bios settings, there is an option called HDD S.M.A.R.T. capability. I have no idea what this is, and I am wondering if enabling or disabling this function has any affect on performance.

Supposedly it'll tell you if your drive is about to explode, but it doesn't work that well apparently.
No effect on performance AFAIK. |

yeah, it's job is to predict when your HDD is about to die, but it slows down your drive a bit I heard, you might want to just leave it disabled...

I use it to report Hard Drive Temperatures. Thats the only thing, but i think its worth it.
