Default GT220 256.35 Kernel 2.6.34 rminitadapter failed

Hello!

I have an HP computer that came with a Geforce GT220 card. I've been running opensuse 11.1 (kernel 2.6.27) on it for some time now. I recently upgraded to opensuse 11.3, which comes with kernel 2.6.34.

I updated the nvidia driver to 256.35 at the same time (using the .run package), but now X won't start. If I look in the Xorg.0.log it shows the following:

I've tried reverting back to the Nvidia driver 195.36.31, but it fails with the same errors. On a whim, I tried loading the nouveau module (modifed xorg.conf to match) and when I do that, X crashes with:

The only thing that seems to get X loading is to use the 'vesa' driver in xorg.conf. I'm at a bit of a loss here - any suggestions are welcome. I've spent a good part of the day googling the error message, and have come across several things, but none that match this error exactly. I've tried several of the suggested fixes (noapic, pci=noacpi, vmalloc) with no better results.

System has an Intel E5300 CPU with 4 gigs RAM.

Attached should be the nvidia-bug-report log and the installer-log. If any more information is needed, please let me know and I can provide it.

Thanks!

Chances are this is fallout from nouveau's attempt to drive the GPU:

Thanks for the quick reply!

The attempts to run with the nvidia binary driver, I have made sure the nouveau driver is blacklisted, and that the initrd doesn't load it (in opensuse, set the NO_KMS_IN_INITRD to yes).

I initially had conflicts compiling the binary driver because of the nouveau loading, so I'm fairly certain it's not trying to load. I've checked the loaded modules (lsmod) and grep'd through the dmesg output for anything related to nouveau and they all come back clean.

Try removing nouveau (you don't need it installed if you're going to use the Nvidia blob anyway) and boot in runlevel 3 (no X). You can do it from the command line: enter grub and just edit the kernel line and put "3" behind it. Be sure to load your new kernel (34).

Purge the Nvidia drivers and reinstall them completely. Generate an xorg.conf with nvidia-xconfig and move it from /etc to /etc/X11.

Reboot normally and your login manager should appear, with the loaded Nvidia module.

Ok, uninstalled the nouveau driver package, removed any other nvidia RPM that yast listed, ran the .run package with --uninstall to clear out those drivers. Rebooted. Ran the .run for the 256.35 drivers and installed them. Rebooted.

Same errors with startx and in the kernel log.

BTW, while it is in the log quotes above, I wanted to specifically point out that this is all with a 64-bit kernel and drivers.

Did you have nvidia-xconfig generate an xorg.conf? It will detect your card and put the correct name in xorg. Please try it, you can backp your existing xorg first.

Sorry, should have mentioned that in the last post - I did have the nvidia installer generate a new xorg.conf. Here is what it gen'd:

Sorry to hear it still didn't work out... But we're not giving up yet, are we? My guess is that the device name nvidia0 is incorrect or not into place, or that the PCI location is not right.

I dug this one up for you: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...module-293198/

A couple of suggestions:
- List available deviced with "ls -hal /dev/nvidia*" and "ls -hal /dev/device*"
- Take a look at the output of "cat /dev/nvidia0" if it's there
- Try loading the Nvidia module manually with "modprobe nvidia"

For the record, are you using a distro package or a downloaded installer? Have you tried redownloading it or did you check the md5sum?

Oh, no, not giving up yet This one has got my curiosity peaked.

I tried removing the /dev/nvidia* files. modprobing nvidia recreates them, but still get the same error. Per that thread you linked, I checked to see if there's a /dev/udev folder, but there's not, so I'm assuming that structure has changed since then.

So far I've tried things with it autoloading the nvidia driver, and by manually modprobe'ing it. Also, I typically use the installer, but in this case I've tried both the installer from nvidia.com and the prepackaged RPM from the opensuse repository with the same results. Currently I've got the installer version installed (RPM was 195.36 while the installer is 256.35).

This system is my brother-in-laws media center. I'm trying to convince him to pull one of his Nvidia cards from his personal computer and swap it into this system to see if we get the same error with a different card. It's like pulling teeth though

Can you double check to make sure that Nouveau still isn't loading?

I know you uninstalled the package, but OpenSUSE 11.3 includes Nouveau in the initrd, so even if you removed it from your system, you might still have it in the initrd, and it may still be loaded after it switches root...

Just try `lsmod|grep nouveau`. If you still see it loaded, try building a new initrd with `mkinitrd` and reboot.

Otherwise, please generate a new nvidia-bug-report.log.

Sure thing, not a problem! A bit more detail too:
For the record, I tried the 256.44 prelease also, but it was no help.
