Same here with my GT240 (Arch Linux x86_64).

However I can work just fine if I do not use any OpenGL stuff (KDE Desktop Effects, OGL Games). If a freeze happens I also still can use SysRQ to reboot the system safely.

But for now I also reverted to 256.35

By the way - I do not know if this is related:
I now reverted to 256.35 and I got no total freezes anymore so far. However sometimes when working with Firefox (maybe 2 times now in almost two days) I got some... "micro freezes".
I mean: It seems like the same situations 256.44 completely froze my X, 256.35 will freeze it, too (mouse cursor becomes stuck) but it will "unfreeze" again after 1-2 seconds. As said, I have no idea if this is related since it only happened two times now. Maybe it's flash or even KDE itself producing this...

Oh and I was also playing with 256.38.03. It seems to behave the same way as 256.44.

Same here.

GTX260, 2.6.35 kernel.

When I played Starcraft 2 (using wine 1.3.0 ) my computer froze for 10-60 seconds from time to time. I was dropped out from many matches for this. Downgrading back to 256.35 seems to have fixed this.

Hi.

I've a similar problem that might or might not be the same which also exclusively only happened so far while watching videos (w/ either vdpau or xv). The video picture starts to stutter (freezes for up to seconds) while the audio continues. The problem worsens rapidly and the audio begins to silence too. Stopping the playback and restarting X usually ends up in a frozen machine right at the point when the X server is trying to end itself- no magic sysrq keys are working at that point, no kernel msgs whatsoever. Sometimes it recovers, sometimes it doesn't.

My machine:
Core i7 860 w/ Palit 9800GTX+ [512MB]
Gentoo x86_64 (~amd64) w/ kernel 2.6.35.2
256.44 nvidia drivers
xorg server 1.8.2

By the way, this happens w/ and w/o composite effects and is not related to the desktop environment being used (KDE, XFCE, ...).

I use all defaults by the nvidia driver except for msi which I have on since ages.

Will try downgrading to 256.35 and see if it fixes things.
matthew.

GT240 with driver 256.44, Ubuntu 10.04 desktop, kernel 2.6.35-14, AMD64: system freezes only when running Firefox 3.6.9. Xorg is using 3-4% from my processor (E7200). Same configuration but with driver 256.35 was running fine on my machine. It's clear for me, the problem is the new 256.44 driver, I will downgrade it to 256.35.

Same on openSUSE 11.3

sometimes this leads to a complete freeze, where only the mouse cursor can be moved, but the rest of the display does not react.

Additional in /var/log/messages there is:
Quote:
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 8, Channel 0000007e
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 13, 0003 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001
which occurs several times

nvidia-bug-report.log.gz

Driver was installed through .sh from nvidia homepage

This is just a "me too".

I finally upgraded from 195.36.25 to 256.44 today. I'm also experiencing freezes of Xorg.
This is on a GT 240 w/ DDR5 RAM. GPU load seems to trigger the freezes; especially running OpenCL kernels...
Gladly the rest of the system still works and I can shutdown the system properly whenever it happens.

Please fix this problem!

We were able to identify the source of the regression and are looking into possible solutions. We hope to be able to provide a fixed driver within the next one to two weeks.

I got similar synopsis if:
1. Firefox is running
2. e.g. Playing Starcraft with wine

If i turn firefox off before launching the game no freeze at all ^^
