Pulse Audio - any tried and true way to revert to OSS?

I don't care for Pulse audio at all, but it seems that every "how to" I can find for getting rid of it is different. Are there any known, solid methods that are reasonably certain to not break my install?

KDE4 doesn't use PA by default(but can) and distros are the ones that implement it into the desktop environments. I think a vanilla GNOME still uses esound.

It's safe to remove with KDE4 and just use the xine backend but I'm really not sure about GNOME.

I've got both Ubuntu and Fedora 13 installed, both Gnome and both PA.

Heh, not gaming in Fedora, but static and delays are common in Ubuntu with it. Seems to be a common problem.

Did a little Doom 3 last night and the sound was crystal clear with no delays. Gotta have my Doom 3 (gaming withdrawal fix)
