Default GTX 460 Vesa Frambuffer @ 1920x1200

With my old 8800GT I used to be able to set my Framebuffer resolution to 1920x1200 using the value of

vga = 0x037d

But I just installed my new GTX-460 and that mode is no longer available so I ran
hwinfo --vbe and it gave me the supported resolutions of

This isn't that big of a deal but it seems odd that my almost 3 year old 8800GT could do it and the GTX-460 can't.

So does anyone know of a way to get 1920x1200 FB with this card?

Thanks

Afaik there is nothing you can do about this (except hoping for an update to your graphics card bios). I have a notebook that does not support the native resolution of its panel in vesa mode…

I did not check for my GTX 460 yet because last time I tried vesafb it was unusably slow.

Do you know if this GTX-460 specific or Manufacturer specific?

I guess it is manufacturer specific. But most manufacturers likely do not bother to change this from the default.
The GTX 460 should be able to do more, but vesafb is limited to the modes the video bios reports as supported. The manufacturers can (afaik) change the video bios which means they can change the announced vesa modes.

Same problem here with a GTX470 from EVGA.
I was using uvesafb on Arch Linux with my MSI GTX275 to have a bootsplash and tty's in 1920x1200 (my native screen resolution) with Splashy. Today i got a GTX470 and that one doesn't go any higher than 1600x1200.

Thanks for posting that, now I know evga has the same problem, my friend ordered a MSI 460 and I'm waiting to see if that one can do 1920x1200. I sent an email to gigabyte about this issue but I have yet to receive a reply

Apparently, the default setting in the BIOS is for the GPU to run in its lowest power state, to keep it cool and to conserve energy. This limits the resolutions available in VBE. I don't know offhand whether or not that's something the manufacturer can tweak. I would recommend just starting X and using xterm.

Same thing here on my 460GTX. It's a bit worse, because mine didn't make it over 1280x1024 in vesa mode. But the thing with the lower power state could also explain why my grub boot splash screen @ 1280x1024 starts notable slower as using a 8800GT before.
