Arrow DELL Notebook, lcd backlight, found a workaround

Hi,
I'm using a DELL M40 Notebook with SuSE 8.0,8.1,8.2.
Sometimes the LCD backlight turned off or was off from the moment I started X. Sometimes restarting X or rebooting helped, sometimes not.
Turning APM and/or ACPI did not change anything.

Since I updated to SuSE 8.2 and the newest nvidia driver I could find a rule for the effect to occur and a somehow 'stable' workaround:

Whenever I start X with the power adaptor (!) plugged in the probability is high to have a dark graphic with no chance to turn the backlight on.

Plugging it off before starting X (and plugging it in afterwards) increases the probability of having an enlighted graphic. Sometimes it even then stays dark but then the following action helps (all the times I had the problem):

1: Toggle the terminal selectors to a text terminal (e.g. by pressing <ctrl><alt><F6>) and back to the (invisible) graphics (<ctrl><alt><F7>) one or more times!
2: In case this does not help stop X (by pressing <ctrl><alt><backspace>) and start it again (from the invisible text terminal) by activating the last command with <arrow up><enter>!

Maybe this could be a hint to the driver developers to understand the bug !

Smile got a new display

In the mean time the described problems appeared more frequently
I'm not quite sure wether they had been related to new nvidia linux/windows2000 drivers...

Today I got a new display (the new one is manufactured by sharp where the original one was an ibm display).
To my own surprise this solved the problems for now.
