Default Need Hard Drive Recommendation

I want to add a 2TB drive to my computer for serving video files on my home network. I'd like one of the 5400 RPM drives since they're so quiet but it seems all of them spin down when not used, is there one that doesn't? I really dislike that feature.

Of course reliability is the most important so what 5400 or 7200 RPM drive do you recommend? A 1.0 TB or 1.5TB is okay too, just looking for the most quiet and reliable drive.

as far as reliability go, they are all the same. it all depends on luck. But to have better lock, don't buy a drive made in China .

for quite drive you got: WD Greens (EARS versions with Advance format,5400RPM-7200RPM), Seagate Barracuda LP (5900RPM) and Samsung Ecogreen F3 (5400RPM).

If you worried about noise, then don't buy Hitachi 2TB 7200RPM, that is quite noisy.

Thanks for warning me about the Hitachi 2TB 7200RPM, because that's one of the drives I was looking at. Do you know if the Samsung and Seagate drives spin down like the WD Green? I'll go with the WD Black before using another green since I hate that spin down stuff. Don't know why I dislike it so much but I do

I just may end up with a WD Black. I really like WD drives too.

Of the bad drives I see come into the shop I'd venture a guess that 80% are seagates. I'll never purchase a seagate drive.

I don't have Sammy Ecodrive F3 (latest model), but I do have 1.5TB Ecodrive F1 and as far as I'm aware it doesn't spindown, my four (two 2TB, and 2 1.5TB) Barracudas LP also don't seem to spin down.

I have the drives in Server 2008 R2 system set to performance in device manager. HDD are used for media storage and when accessing the media from XBMC over the network there is no evident delay that would suggest drives might be spinning up.

I also have four WD Green 2TB (EARS revisions) HDD, and only 2 spin down, the drives that are in my Sans Digital external enclosure.
1 drive is in my main rig, last one is in my server and it also doesn't spin down.

I wish I had $400 to spend I would grab them for when WH2 finally gets rtm. I have a bunch of random drives now that range in size.

Samsung and WD for me. Seagate drives I try always do that crunching sound when loading like old drives from back in the 90's used to do. I used to use them back in the early 2000's and hated WD's because they had a high pitch whine... then a new seagate I bought did that crunching again so next time I tried a new WD - much better. I recently gave seagate a shot again for a work PC since the drive was $10 cheaper than a WD and it has the same crunching sound. Pretty much exact same PC beside it I built a few months earlier using a WD Green has no sound at all.

Pretty stupid anecdotal evidence I know especially since I haven't tried all models of drives (only tried 5400rpm WD's (silent) vs 7200rpm Seagates (crunching) and 7200rpm Samsung (quiet enough) so hopefully the slower Seagates are better.

These days I buy rotational HDD's for their quietness alone since I have SSD's for speed.
