Default Java 64-bit install (SOLVED)

Help a brotha out. I've been trying to install Java, and I'm not getting any error messages, but I am still getting the message that the JRE plugin is not installed. I've tried installing it via 64-bit RPM, and by installing it via sh java*.bin

Any other suggestions?

Nevermind....I got it working. Here are my steps:
  1. Download the latest java bin.
  2. Change to super user.
  3. Chmod +x jre-(latest build).bin.
  4. mkdir /usr/java
  5. cp jre-(latest build).bin /usr/java/.
  6. cd /usr/java.
  7. ./jre-(latest build).bin
  8. ln -s /usr/java/jre1***/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/libnpjp2.so.
  9. Test out your java plugin with a website that uses java.

IcedTea also works. You should have some repos for Java.

If I used IcedTea, would I have to do any linking?

Not sure actually but distros usually have a sun-java plugin for web broswers. The main thing is, you solved it.

I assume you're using Ubuntu, or some other Debian-based distribution. Unfortunately I can only talk about Debian, but things could be "close enough".

Installing software outside package management can be considered harmful. First of all there's no centralised method of keeping those components up to date, and second, there is no guarantee that they won't conflict with applications/libraries/whatever installed through package management. In short, don't do it. Don't do it unless you know what you're doing.

On Debian "make-jpkg" can be used to build number of Java distribution packages into Debian packages. Java plugin might also be available in the repository; just check your favourite package manager front-end.
