Default NVIDIA & Debian "woody"

I can't get my Debian "woody" Linux to run the x-server.
I downloaded the installer, but it can't find my kernel headers.
So I tried:
Quote:
sh NVIDIA-4496..... --kernel-name 2.2.20-idepci
It runs the installer, but still gives me the kernel-headers not found thing.

So i tried the
Quote:
sh NVIDIA-4496..... --extract-only
but I don't know which lines to alter with either the kernel name or kernel directory, what exactly should I change?
And where is the kernel directory actually?

Thanks,

from me & woody

Part success.

I used to have VT problems when connecting TV-Out.

The new drivers seems to partly fix that.

When using twinview and X 4.3 as suggested in the README everything works well.

When using multiple Screens one for monitor and one for TV the VT switching problem reappears both for X 4.2 and 4.3. The VTs become blank, but the machine does not hang as it used to, and the VT's seem to reinitialize reasonably as soon as X is shut down.

All in all, this is the first driver release that is actually usable for me, and the minor inconveniences still present is something I can live with.

Unhappy

I am using XandrOS v1 with the current system updates; p4 2.66Ghz; 1Gb ram; GforceFX 5900 Ultra 256.

I dropped out of X and ran the installation process like the readme said, but I ran into an error that has me confused. When it comes to Linux I still consider myself a newbie. The error message was as follows:

____________________________________________
ERROR: Unable to find the kernel header files or the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel header files for you kernel; on Red Hat linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel header files are installed you may specify the kernel include path with the '--kernel-include-path' command line option.
____________________________________________

I have attached the following log file:
'/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'
_________________________________________

At this point I really don't know how to proceed, except to wait for someone to code a version of this driver for Xandros or to drop back down to Sindows when I wish to actually 'use' my new 5900...

Thumbs down This version seems flakier than 4363 here...

I'm running a GeForce 4 MX 440 (128MB DDR, with TV out present but unused) on a Mandrake 9.1 Athlon XP 2400+ system with updates applied (incl. the 2.4.21-0.25mdk kernel, so I'm building kernel interfaces for the drivers), and whereas 4363 was rock solid this version causes problems.
Specifically:
(1) When moving the mouse cursor over a GL window there are artifacts around the cursor.
(2) When running America's Army there are major glitches in the scenery (e.g. the first MOUT training scenario, the textures glitch in the entryway).
(3) When switching back to a VESA framebuffer console window from my X session, the screen was full of not-quite-garbage (certain characters were grossly blown up and distorted, but the console still worked ok - I could log into it blind and issue commands).
Most of the changes mentioned in the changelog didn't matter to me, anyway, so I've reverted to 4363 happily, but I hope it's a useful datum for you.

1.grab the correct patch here
http://www.minion.de/
2.extract the Nvidia driver:
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run --extract-only
3.cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2/usr/src/nv
4. patch -p1 --dry-run < NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4496-2.5.diff
5. if no failed then:
patch -p1 < NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4496-2.5.diff
6. mv Makefile.kbuild Makefile
7. make
8. su , type password
9. make install
10. edit /usr/X11/XF86Config :

Default Lack of Bliss

I seem to be lacking the bliss that so many others are in. I am running a GF4Ti4200 on a SuSE 8.2 pro box. I had previously downgraded to a .3xxx from .4363 because my machine crashed every time I exitted from a X or switched from X to a VC if I was using Multiple-Screen configuration. TwinView seemed to work ok (IIRC). So downgrading to the .3xxx removed the ability to do what was crashing, but TwinView worked so I stuck with it for a while... Now I thought I'd upgrade to .4496 and give it a whirl. No,w TwinView Crashes when I log out, exit X, or switch to a VC! Not an improvement for me... SuSE is using glibc-2.3, etc...
Any clues?aiu1411@gandalf:~> cat /etc/X11/XF86Config

Default Lack of bliss redux

Sorry, I meant that instead of just multiple monitors causing troubles, I have the X-crash even with the single-monitor setup shown above. My frustration compounds...
Perhaps I'll disconnect all but one monitor and see if that changes anything...

Smile Excellent

Glad to see you've started work on APM support, hopefully you'll get around to ACPI also. Got a very nice dual-screen setup on rh9 with a FX5200 card and it was a doodle to set up. (Ok, It's probably not the most intuitive thing unless you've played around in XF86Config earlier) But the drivers work ok, 3d is good. Now if only openoffice would understand Xinerama. :-P

The installer is nice, but I'd still like to produce rpm's of it. Maybe I'll get around to making a patch for the installer to provide something like --make-rpms. :-P

Again, thanks to nvidia for providing excellent linux drivers, even though they're not open-source.

Thumbs down Disappointing performance

I've noticed that X's CPU usage in 3D apps with the latest drivers is about twice as high as compared with 1.0-4363. Used to be 2-6%, now it's 8-14%. Consequently I'm getting lower framerates, for example in Q3 demo. So until they fix that I'm reverting to 4363. My video card is FX5200 250/250, btw.

Default BLISS AT LAST!

I'm not sure what exactly what I did, but here's one thing worth noting:
While attempting to make TwinView work in previous versions I had to connect my monitor to the DFP connection using the converter included with my GF4. Moving this back to the native CRT plug seems to have cured my problems, along with reinstalling the driver a couple times and rebooting once or twice... Very strange! But I'm not complaining.
I made active the saved TwinView and MultiHead configs I had created a while back (XF86Config.TwinView and XF86Config.MultiHead) and they both work fine! I've not testing too much for performance yet, but I'm happy so far...

gandalf:~> glxgears
22018 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4403.600 FPS
27735 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5547.000 FPS
28705 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5741.000 FPS

Now, if I could only get a NON-MultiHead config on demand for when my daughter plays with PotatoGuy (so she doesn't have to look over at the TV to find her pointer ) we'd be all set!
