The X server hangs very often at startup. It stops with the NVIDIA logo for a long time (several minutes). The Xorg.log trace at that point is "Loading extension NV-GLX".
This happens both with the drivers downloaded from the opensuse repository and those from the NVIDIA page. If I replace the driver with version 195.36.31 the problem is solved. This is happening since version 256.35. I already get rid of the nouveau driver, put the nomodeset boot option, etc. The only solution is to install the old driver. The card is a geForce 8500GT, kernel 2.6.34.7-0.3-default. Do this happen to somebody else? |

I have several opensuse 11.3 x64 / nvidia machines and they are working fine here on 8200 / 8800GT / GTX 275 / GTX 480. You didn't specify if you were using the RPM's or the nvidia installer. I personally always use the nvidia installer.

I have the problem with the rpm's (http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.3/, packages nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default and x11-video-nvidiaG02) and with the installer (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run).
I solve the problem with the old installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.31-pkg2.run that I got from ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Li..._64/195.36.31/. In the past I ran Opensuse 11.2 without problems using the rpm, I guess the problem arose with the change from 195 to 256. |

Hi.
I have the same problem on my machine. Sometimes when switching from normal X to some kind of video overlay (like mplayer with vdpau or mythtv with vdpau) or switching video modes (at least it seems like that's the cause) the system freezes for a while with some activity on my hdd sometimes and then comes back a few seconds, sometimes minutes later. I also get the freeze at most of my logins to X. Specs: Phenom II X2 550, NVIDIA Geforce GT 8500 256er driver series, opensuse 11.3 (not a fresh install but kept current via distribution update) I always use the nvidia installer and never any rpms. In the bootloader I use the options brokenmodules=nouveau and nomodeset and I rmmod'ded nouveau. There's nothing specific or helpful in /var/log/messages or Xorg logs, at least nothing that I can see ... 195er series works without those problems. Help with this would be appreciated ! Thanx in advance :-) |

Maybe this is something specific to the 8500 GT...

No, it is not specific to the 8500GT. I have an acer laptop with a Geforce GT 330M and Opensuse 11.3. I just seem unable to start X with nvidia's drivers. I have uninstalled nouveau, tried the rpm from nvidia's repository and the following two installers:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-256.53.run NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.06.run It doesn't matter which one I try, it won't work. I'm just glad the laptop came with two graphic cards, and at least Intel's works. (and yes, i was making sure that nvidia's graphic card was chosen when trying to start X using nvidia's drivers). Greetings |
