If all you do is run 3Dmark06.... try looking at a whole range of benchmarks. I like the Phenom II's a lot, if you're on any sort of reasonable budget I'd go for one, but IMO, the core i7 950 is the better CPU for gaming.

Just got a quote from a place on a machine, by the time I get my redundancy cash through it will probably be different but gives me something to go by. Be interesting to see if I could build it for much less myself.

i7-950 (3.06GHz @ max 3.8GHz) , 6GB KINGSTON HYPER-X TRI-DDR3 ram, 640GB WD HD, CORSAIR 650W PSU (TX650) 80+ PSU, TITAN FENRIR EXTREME DIRECT TOUCH COPPER CPU COOLER, ATI HD 5870.

Comes in at £1174 inc. Vat and delivery.

Yea the i7 950 is going to be the better gaming cpu than an amd 6-core. If you aren't going sli/xfire you won't notice a difference, but the core i5/i7 series really gets to stretch it's legs with another card in the system.

Better alone is a wishy washy term.
The AMD will not perform better than the Intel.
The AMD has a better bang for the buck than Intel.

If you are looking to have the fastest, then go with Intel.
If you want to be competitive and still have $600 left over for beer, go with AMD.

Simply said you are going to pay, and pay quite a lot, for that little bit of extra performance.

That's a better way of saying what I was trying to get at.

I figure with my 6 core I get 85% of the performance of an i7 920 for a lot less total cost. It makes me quite happy.

Which begs the question, would two GTX 460s in SLI beat a GTX 470 or HD 5870? Last time I was involved in all this I had a pair of 7800GTs in SLI and it was a total pain in the ass getting it to play nicely with alot of games, driver support was not cool.

Aaargh, now I remember why I had a break from this. lol

SLI has improved so much from the 7 series. Also 460s will scale really well.

If you had a break from PC gaming I wouldn't be looking into a setup that could potentially cause further headaches. Keep it simple, no SLI, Crossfire, RAID or excessive overclocking. Even buying a rig that requires overclocking to perform on par isn't a good idea, buying the i7 950 is good for this reason.

Playing the course and getting one over par is still cool, especially if you only had to pay half price.

I'd suggest getting a dual card capable motherboard and psu that can handle two, and starting with one card. If you have the desire later, the price will certainly be lower.
