Default nvidia drivers not working on optimus laptop

On a Asus U33JC with nvidia optimus configuration, I've tried to install the nvidia drivers using the Ubuntu "enable restricted drivers" method, and after rebooting, I get a blank screen, and Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't give me anything.

Since I cannot get a screen or terminal to work, how can I produce a useful log to send to you in this situation?

Useless - you can't use nVidia to draw a screen on Optimus hardware so reconfigure your xorg.conf for using INTEL graphics.
That's the only way to use Optimus laptops under Linux.
