I need to reproduce this before anything else can happen. I'll get to it today if at all possible.

Hello,
I have had the same pb when logging out X (and also when switching to full screen console Ctrl-Alt-F1 etc.), blank dark screen, and the reset button to get started again. I'm also using TV-out. Motherboard Asus A7N8X Deluxe CPU Athlon XP 2200 RAM 256Mb $ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0 Model: GeForce4 MX 440 IRQ: 11 Video BIOS: 04.17.00.45.00 Card Type: AGP Running Mandrake 9.1 with lasted kernel update : 2.4.21-0.25mdk. Had to reinstall 4363. I had hoped that 4496 would have solved what seemed to be some slight instabilities that I didn't have with my old MSI motherboard (VIA266 chipset using linux kernel module agpgart for AGP). |

In addition one to the upper entry.
I do not use the TV Out. The problem remains - leave X (to the CONSOLE) and the computer hangs. |

I mention a bit about the same problem in the thread about the new 4496 driver. When I exit from X server (shutting down/rebooting, logging into console mode) I got black screen. I have to say that the computer is not freezing but it's a kind unuseable.
My home configuration: Duron 1300, sis 745 mobo chipset, geforce4 mx420, Debian 3.0 r0, kernel 2.4.21, TV out cable is not plugged. All this happens with drivers 4349 and 4369. Yesterday I installed the new version (4496) and the problem dissapeared ![]() Now one interesting thing - when at lilo prompt I use the parameter vga=794 to change the boot console resolution and start linux, work in X environment and change to console login I do not get black screen and everything is visible except the fonts are a bit screwed. Regards uno

Oh, I forgot that the problem I described above exists only on one PC. Drivers 4349 and 4369 work pretty good on other PCs using same Debian distro and many different nVidia videocards (TNT, GeForce2 MX400, GeForce4 MX440 agp8x, GeForceFX5200) and different motherboards. I hope this helps.
Best regards, uno

I installed now the driver 4496.
The problem unfortunately remains. The computer falls completely, it keeps running also not more in the background. Thus I unfortunately also no Script can write was the computer automatically shutdown after I wants X (and thus Linux ) abandoned. |

I installed XFree 4.3.0 and test the nv driver -> there is the same problem !
There is a problem to change over always if I attempts certain dissolutions. The boot-Parameter vga=749 ( see above ) produces a total crash. Kernelproblem or Hardware problem ? Debian 3woody Xfree 4.3.0 Kernel 2.4.20 P4 / Asus P4PE GeForce FX5200 |

Hi,
I have no problem with the 'nv' driver. Only the 'nvidia' drivers cause the hang on my computers. |

Ya, this is the exact problem that I have been having for a year with my gf4ti4200. I also have a TV plugged into the tv-out of my card. I hope the nvidia team fixes this soon. I've experienced the problem on Redhat, SuSe, Mandrake, and Debian.

No tv cable plugged into mine, but I get the same problem. RH9 and nforce using onboard video. Well, actually mine doesnt totally lock the machine when I log out, I can still log back in just by typing the commands, but I dont see anything.

There seem to be 2 problems:
- X crashes completely on escaping to command line (wether by logout or [ctrl][alt][F1-6]), taking the kernel with it. Blank screen, no reaction to keyboard and no remote login possible. Not even reaction on ping. Hard reset or power down is the only solution. - X leaves you with a blank screen, but commands can still be entered, remote login is still possible, and X can be restarted. Don't know if those two cases are caused by the same 'bug'...
