You can still get tv-out and 3d to work ... you just can't boot with your cable plugged-in. Once X is started, you can plug your tv-out cable back with no problems whatsoever. If you enable twinview clone in your config, you can watch fullscreen dvds or games with your tv-out correctly.

Just don't let it plugged in while rebooting

Question

I'm having the same problem with Mankdrake 9.2 RC2, using the latest NVidia driver.

Any new developments on this? I haven't seen any posts in this thread in awhile???

Default laptops / tvout

this problems seems to only affect some laptops (eg my Toshiba 2430-402) and peple with twinview and/or tv-out. so for some people the solution is to not use or plug in the tv-out.
afaik no solution exists for my laptop except to go back to the older drivers (4191).

nVidia driver 4496.

I HAVE TO downgrade to 4363 and the problem was solved

So I think there is a bug(?) in the latest driver nVidia ?
I have exactly the same configuration (except that I use celeron 800) and the same problem with 4496. Had to downgrade to 4363

I have a gf4 420 Go 32M in my laptop and i am experiencing the same problem.

once x is started i cannot get back to text mode. cannot switch to virtual terminals if they are in text mode. it does not lock however all i see is th eblack screen. i can login and start x blind and it starts just fine. Also if i launch something to another virtual terminal if its in x its ok ie full screen win4lin.

attempted to downgrade to 4191 without success.

running 4496-r3 (gentoo ebuild revision)

its quite annoying not to be able to switch back to text mode as i use qingy as a login manager and it has a useless cool factor sinc eyou can only see it off a fresh boot.

has anyone had any success fixing this yet??

This thread seems to be about two problems. Some are experiencing lock-ups when exiting X and some (like me) get a garbled text-mode when switching to another VT or exiting X.

I have been able to "solve" my problem by booting in nonfb-mode. Being a newbe I don really know what this means but it works.

I have a GForce 4 MX 440 and is using driver version 4496.

I hope this helps someone, until a proper bugfix is released.

For me it dosnt matter if i boot with frame buffer support or without frame buffer support. either way after starting x the only way to get back to text mode is a reboot. also im not using tvout

Default Fix for Grub?

Ok, so I noticed someone solved this problem by passing a vga param to lilo as seen here:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...threadid=19801

However, what would be the equiv for grub? Wonder if it'll work if I just disable bootsplash.
