Jussayin' I find it kind of fishy that you join this forum on the launch of the new AMD cards to just to bad mouth them.

Yeah the drivers for Nvidia are better, but when I had my 4770 I could still play any game I wanted to without any serious issue.

Not too shabby overall to be honest,as only a heavily overclocked GTX460 card,like the FTW edition from EVGA,can keep up and sometimes beat a stock clocked HD6870,but those FTW edtitons are more expensive too.


How would an overclocked HD6870 perform though,at which point even the GTX460 FTW,being already highly overclocked as it is,probably couldn't keep up anymore....In any case,it's impressive performance for the money paid.....Crossfire performance is also noteworthy in that is was scaling better than with HD5870 cards in several games.


Now it makes me wonder for the big boys,the Cayman and the antilles releases in a few weeks from now,but if bart's improvement over juniper(The HD5700 series),is anything to go by,cayman's performance should easily beat an HD5870 or a GTX480,while the dual cayman GPU card(antilles),should be in it's own market,with no competition at all for the fastest single card on the market period,regardless if it's a dual GPU card.


Money is ready for a pair of antilles cards,again,in quad crossfire madness,and i will order as soon as they're released...There's 3 displays to feed afterall...

I would expect 6970 performance to fall somewhere between 6850 and 6870 xfire numbers. Should beat the 480 rather soundly I would think.

Now imagine the antilles card using a pair of cayman GPU's,even if they're downclocked to save power,like what happens with the HD5970 cards.....Should be insane performance wise,perhaps only 20% slower than a pair of HD6970's cards in crossfire.

So maybe if you buy a 6850 right now you'll get a 6870 with lower clocks instead? Or maybe this means that many 6850s will be unlockable to 6870 status with all 1120 shaders enabled?

The only problem with this is that the fully unlocked 6850 apparently went to some reviewers, so you have a skewed review on how a standard 6850 would perform. At least Techpowerup reviewed their fully unlocked 6850 with only 960 shaders enabled.

Can anyone find any info on multimonitor support? Curious if these cards are able to do 3+ monitors without the active DP splitter.

They have non-active DP->DVI converters now that are $20ish and work just as good as an active one. Also, DP 1.2 that the 68xx series supports has daisy chaining of display port for up to 3 monitors from one single DP.

I've been researching all this of late since my mate in the army wants me to build him a PC early next year when he's back from being posted overseas and his one stipulation is that he really wants 3 monitors and a rig powerful enough to run them. So even if I don't end up getting a 6970 I'm probably going to be getting one for him in ~6 months.

Only up to 1920x1200 was the word a few months ago, this could have changed with DP 1.2 but I wouldn't count on it. You'd have to have a damn lot of money to blow to have a 3 monitor 2560x1600/1440 setup
