Default nvidia drivers and ubuntu 10.10

I've noticed many post here and other forums about the ubuntu 10.10, nvidia graphics cards and driver 260.19.12.

I've noticed they don't seem to work well together for a variety of reasons. I'm new to ubuntu and so far really like the OS. I have attempted to apply many of the common fixes and workarounds to correct my issues, but have not been able to find a solution. I will, of course, post the correct log files when I get home from work. I found this forum from within the ubuntu forums.

I see some mention of nvidia.ko, X and xorg etc.... is the issue with the nvidia drivers themselves or with linux? Or both?

Without knowing the specifics of the problems you are talking about, it's really impossible to say where the issues lay.

However, I have a dual boot with vista. Ubuntu 10.10 32bit new install I have two monitors graphics card: G86 Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS

can't install nvidia driver 260-19.12

Using the recommended drivers from additional drivers utility both failed

Attempted to manually install drivers failed. nomodeset failed

I get a can't load nvidia.ko

I uninstalled nouveau and blacklisted it and all the other processes. followed many options here and other places

Here is my var/log/nvidia-installer.log

I was looking at the monitors to figure out which was vga and dvi and I restarted and now I have both monitors and I'm able to adjust refresh rates etc... but no nvidia drivers.

I have two outputs one is vga and the other is DVI. BOTH monitors are connected by VGA connectors, so one is converted by the cable.

This is a 32-bit memory limitation issue. Your options are to use 64-bit if your system supports it or increase vmalloc. The README explains this problem and how to fix it: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...kva_exhaustion

I did some searching and I reviewed the section on the readme file. I'm not sure on how to fix this, but I did find some sites with info on this. I did come across this site that does give some information on the issue and some suggestions on the correction.

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Common_Pr...malloc_too_sma

Does this seem acceptable for ubuntu 10.10 32 bit ?

Thanks

Edit: my vmalloc Total in the /proc/meminfo file is 122880 kB, used 120808 kB

Just stuff vmalloc=192M onto the kernel parameters line in grub and be done with it.

Thank you for the suggestion, I'm just a bit stuck on how to do this..

I'm using grub2

I assume I would need to enter this into this file...

/etc/default/grub

What is the syntax for doing this?

I found the syntax to be----

vmalloc=192M

Does it matter at which location/order I place this?

Put this line at the very bottom of /etc/grub/default:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="vmalloc=192M"

and then run this command: sudo update-grub
(or possibly: sudo update-grub2 ).

Default Re: nvidia drivers and ubuntu 10.10

Hi,

I am also like you but facing a lot of issues with installing the NVIDIA drivers on a system configuration having dual cards / more than one graphics adapter.

As mlord rightly pointed out, pls change the following line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash vmalloc=256M"

That should fix the VMALLOC issue.

But however after installing through this method, the display does not show up in your laptop screen and it hangs up in
"CHECKING BATTERY STATE..."

In that case, it means the NVIDIA driver couldnt find the SCREEN to display what is actually supported by the graphics card. You have to use an external monitor or change the settings in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I am currently facing this issue and trying to figure out how to get this working.

Once i figure it out, i will post it here. Hope what i have said, helps

AJ

Default Re: nvidia drivers and ubuntu 10.10

I guess I don't mind doing some of these things to get the darn driver to work,,,, buuuttt. My system does work right now and I have both monitors working with the open source drivers.... so, I might just stick to what I have right now.

I just feel that this shouldn't be this difficult to get video drivers to work. I really think somegthing simple is being missed. It seems with every repair/work around it requires yet another fix or workaround that goes deeper into the system (that I know nothing about, but do like learning).

So, if I do this fix then I can expect to be editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf files.

I don't think HellraiserAJ's post is related to your problem. You are unlikely to encounter his problem. He should open a new thread and post a detailed bug report if he wants help.

Increasing vmalloc will most likely fix your problem. 128M is the default value for the Linux kernel. Generally this is enough, but it is not on your system. Unfortunately, there are tradeoffs for dividing the 4GiB of virtual memory for a 32-bit system. Honestly, if your CPU supports 64-bit, I'd recommend moving to a 64-bit distro. It will have better performance because of the larger number of general purpose registers on the CPU, and you won't experience this vmalloc problem. Plus, you'll still be able to run 32-bit applications anyway.
