Default Video card that will support 2560x1440 under Ubuntu

Hello,

I just grabbed a 27" Dell U2711 and I will be upgrading my video card to use it.

I want to know whether I should have any problems using this screen at its native resolution under the latest Ubuntu with the binary nVidia drivers. I am planning on a GTS 450 card from EVGA that says it will drive screens up to 2560x1600 and has dual DVI-I outputs.

I have googled quite a bit but most people having problems seem to be using notebooks and therefore VGA or HDMI ports (that don't seem to support this high a resolution).

Thank you,

Gonzalo

It'll support resolutions up to 2560x1600 if it have Dual-Link DVI-I.

AFAIK all currently produced desktop cards have it and if they have HDMI it also supports >1920x1080.

But is it possible that it would support 2560x1600 but _not_ 2560x1440? I've had this happen with some oddball widescreen LCDs and older video cards - they would go up to higher resolution, but the exact mode needed was not supported.

Thanks,

I don't think it's possible with any adapters avaliable on market.

You probably won't get 2560x1440 by D-SUB, but not by DVI.

P.S. Ofcourse you won't get 2560x1440 framebuffer without using nouveau drivers, but I don't think it's a big problem, cause in X you should get full resolution any way.
