Have you looked at the "manuals" that come in the boxes these days? And for a large publisher that gets them in massivle bulk orders a single DVD is what, a couple of pennies?

Plus I don't have to worry about a cashier trying to push "disc warranties" down my throat with Steam

For music and video I have no problems buying retail, I like physical media and dislike overly compressed music and video. But for games it's a completely different thing. Just like some one said, what's the use of a physical copy when I have to go online and download a 400mb patch and then activate the game to use it. I might as well save the space of having the physical media since the data on the physical media is obsolete the day it hit the store shelves in many cases.

The retailers who want to ban steam games I say go for it. They are right in a sense that Steam on games is going to take away their customers, but in all honesty their banning games will make nearly 0 difference after all these years of them neglecting PC gamers. I'd think the only ones who will really be hit by the ban are slow internet/dialup users.

Steam is a service. Gabe Newell has said it himself. The industry is in a transition, where (gaming) is moving from a product to that of a service. The service, in this case, is steam. Steam survives on continued purchases from users. As long as Steam continues to expand its library, it will continue to make money, which will fund the service indefinitely. The fact that all of your games can be tied to an account that can be accessed from any computer with internet access and steam installed is wonderful.

The retailers do not want steam to survive, even though we all know that it will. If it continues to be a success, consoles will be next. Eventually, all games will be downloaded from the internet and on to a console. Game reatailers need to evolve, or they will die. There are better mediums out there than a box with a disc in it.

GAME has cheap prices online than the retail store, which both of them are cheaper than Steam.
retail store, sells more then just PC games or downloads, their overhead is shared by different departments, in game only store you console games (PS3 RROD_Box, Wii, DS, etc..) game systems, accessories, then in big retail stores you got everything from Air conditioning units to Zunes. while the total store overhead might be large, when its divided into all categories/departments that is a different story. printing boxes, manuals (those are almost non-existent now), disc is cheap, really cheap.

steam has 30+ server sites around the world with 20+ million users downloading games from them, cost of server maintains and bandwidth can be quite large. steam doesn't sell any extra junk to minimize cost.

The point is, Steam have much lower costs than retail outlets, so their games should be cheaper when they're not.

If you think selling digital downloaded games at the same or more than the boxed retailed is fair, then fine, more fool you. Valve get a monopoly, sell games at discounted prices when that is common anyway to draw you in. Supermarkets do it all the time, when the rest of their products are more expensive and deals are just incentives to make you buy more.

What annoys me about these shops saying they are gonna try and ban steam is the fact that when you actually go in places like gamestation, granger games ect they have a whole wall on the left dedicated to ps3 .. a whole wall on the right dedicated to the 360 and so on ... when i go and say "wheres you pc games mate" they are like "ermm, See those four games over there? thats them"

The best highstreet retailer to go to for games is GAME and instore they still dont have as many games as steam does.

Thats why i like steam, It supports ONLY us pc gamers.

I'm an idiot for buying Black Ops off Steam. 40.... what a joke. Why did I do that? Whyyyy. *Smacks self in the face*

Now, if I need to format, I can't just grab the box off the shelf and reinstall it that way.

You have two hard drives, right? Keep steam and all your steam games on a seperate drive from your OS drive. That way if you do have to reinstall windows all you need is to reinstall steam and it'll detect all your games already on your driver- no need to re-download 'em. Super simple.
