If it's not the worst Nvidia card ever made, the GTX 480 is probably very close. While I never owned the ill-fated GeForce FX 5800, the GTX 480 may not be far off. It's overpriced, hot, underperforming and noisy. Sound a little like the FX 5800? It took some time, but Nvidia finally corrected its GTX 480 mistake with the GTX 580. From what I've read, it's the real deal. At least the GTX 480 owners out there have something to heat their house with this winter!

I don't think the 480 can match the failure that the FX 5800 was. At least with a GeForce 480 you were getting the fastest GPU for DX11. When the FX 5800 released it absolutely sucked for DX9. Some people don't really care about heat, noise, energy consumption. But everyone cares about performance.

Apparently the GTX 480 is going EOL. With the GTX 580 out, this makes sense as the GTX 480 costs more to manufacture. Also, the GTX 570 will be out by the end of this year or in January 2011, and it will also be faster than the GTX 470.

I wouldn't say it is anywhere near the worst. In fact, it was the single fastest chip video card around until the launch of the 580.

While not being best bang for the buck, I would say that the card is quite nice.
It even has decent amount of memory, so I can enjoy those old games with 32xSSAA.. ![]() No, Fermi is nothing like nv30 which was a guite a letdown, especially with new games and new effects on, Fermi seems to do quite decently with the new bells and whistles. Oh and yes, it could have been better, it could have been 580. ![]() Happily Keppler is coming soonish so we might see what the revisited arcitecture can do. |

Agree with Maverickman. NVIDIA needed to release the 480 in whatever shape or form. But they knew it wasn't ready for prime time.
I'm ready for an NVIDIA skit like they ran when they laughed about the dustbuster. The 580 - nice... |

Was unaware about the 570. Will definitely upgrade to that from the 470. Hopefully the cross margin will be low with me selling the 470.
