Yeah last time I checked they had 51% of the market... up from 30% two years ago, guess it was all those bad products from ATI and super good ones from NV that made that happen, right?

Exactly what I was thinking. AMD/ATI seems to be pretty damn good in market share even though they're making such "crappy cards".

There's no denying that the GTX 580 is a better card. It would have been even better if had come out 6 months ago and been called the GTX 480...

And red777star, you really should check your facts before posting BS about the 5870's temperatures. Last I checked, the GTX 480 has the beefiest stock cooler ever created for a GPU, while the 5870 simply has a decent cooler. Even with the GTX 480's beefy cooler, it manages to have a louder fan at load and it runs hotter too. Yep, that HD 5870 runs super hot...

I wasn't talking about marketshare, but I can see why you would want to steer the conversation away from what I actually said about ATi making the second best GPU for years.

If we were going to talk about market share, maybe we should discuss the desktop discrete market share because that is what we're talking about here?

A quite different story with NVIDIA at 59% and ATi at 41% isn't it?

red777star must have had a defective GPU or something because almost everything he posts is contrary to the majority of 5870 reviews or my experience with one.

One thing is for sure- the 5870 does run cooler than the 480 when both have reference cooling.

I would note though:
A. In an enthusiast case like the HAF932 I'm running, reference cooling on a 480 is fine. The noise won't make your dog jump out the window, and the heat will be leaving the case with good airflow.

B. I looked at newegg, and they sell six 480s with non reference cooling, all of which run cooler and quieter than the reference model. So 480 buyers do have a choice in the matter.

*fixed*

Even then STALKER SHOC with complete mod and Metro 2033 could still get my card running louder than I liked.

No, but one of the worse.

I wouldn't touch either the GTX470 or GTX480.

The biggest issue here is that half of you define "worst" by hottest or least efficient.

It is true that the 4xx series was hot and inefficient, but they also had superior performance, albeit being 6 months late to market.

The fact that my $300 GTX 470 runs faster than a 5870 in all benchmarks when its overclocked the way that it is to me makes it a "better" card. It's $100 cheaper, just as fast or faster, and the trade-off for performance is heat / noise... that's not exactly a new concept for anyone who's been involved with the enthusiast market of computers for the last 10 years.

This thread is dumb and merely just plopped down to start a flame war. The only thing worth noting is the facts;

The GTX 4xx series was 6 months late to market
The GTX 4xx series is loud and hot
The GTX 4xx series provides superior performance to equivalent ATI cards
The GTX 4xx series provided a near perfect 2x performance gain to the 2xx series in graphically intense titles.

Take all those facts how you will but in general it was a significant gain of the previous generation, it was done at a relatively low price (at least with the GTX 470), and trades efficiency for performance, something we should all know as a basic fact of life, both in computers and in general.

And yet you bought a 580? That makes zero sense, considering the 580 is only marginally better than the 480, and the 470 is actually a better value than the 480 was.

Also, enough about the heat. Where were all these people whining about heat when the 8000 series came out? Those cards are still universally praised and they ran MUCH hotter at idle and about the same at load.

Well I don't think anyone is complaining about the idle temps (except maybe those with multiple monitors, though I think that issue got somewhat sorted out). Unless something was really wrong with your 8800, it shouldn't really get up to the temps than the 480 gets up to under load.
