It'll be good to see what bang for the buck new procs offer, but if I'm not mistaken an AM3+ proc won't run with full functionality in an AM3 board?

If that's the case I may just grab a 1090 rather than a proc/mobo combo.

This might be the best bet.

Snag one up while they're cheap. Sell that 955 to off set some of that cost. BAM! Gotta' rockin' 6-core system that should last a while. Especially if you get that thing near 4Ghz.

That is correct, they will work but not at peak performance.

Thanks Lyme. Either way, whether a 1090 for my current board or a whole new platform I'm sure the value will be pretty good. Gotta love that about AMD, those price points.

If the Bulldozer 8 core is impressive, I may go with one (assuming the AMD platform supports SLI by then...)

It isn't up to the 'platform', it is a design decision made by motherboard manufacturers. There are boards out there that do both.

Depends on what your idea of 'impressive' is... it will certainly be a major step from the K8 and K10 microarchitectures, but not without its own dose of caveats... some sites say they will perform on par with actual 6-core thubans or even slightly worse, depending on what you're executing.

Of course, as there's no real benchmarks and reviews out there, it's impossible to tell at this point, even if they're set for a... May launch, maybe?

Personally, I think it could be a nice upgrade for anyone wanting something new from AMD, although I'll probably refrain myself until they decide to go 65W (and come on, AMD, still dual channel for the desktop? let us go quad... Intel had 3, we want 4 ¬¬)

And those sites are wrong. The initial confusion was that Bulldozer allowed for 2 cores to share resources and take up less die space and still deliver 90% of the performance of a traditionally designed dual core CPU. People then thought this meant 90% the IPC of Phenom II. It doesn't, it would mean 90% of the performance of a Bulldozer chip designed in a non-modular way.

If you factor in that we are only going to be getting 8 core chips for decent prices because of this design choice then it doesn't look so bad.

AMD employees posting as various forums have confirmed Bulldozer will have higher single thread performance than Phenom II even before turbo is factored into the equation. Turbo will only increase the difference.

I'm pretty sure an 8-core Bulldozer will way outperform any of the new Sandy Bridge chips...
