Default Resolution on HP w2338h

I recently purchased the HP w2338h monitor (previously had HP w1907).
My graphics card is NVIDIA Quadro NVS 290.

With the new monitor, the recommended resolution is 1920x1080. However, when I try to change it, it only allows me to go up to 1680x1050. Regardless, when I switch to that, and restart X, it goes back to 1440x900 (which was the optimal res for the previous monitor).

I tried inserting 'Modes "1920x1080"' into my xorg.conf, but any time I restart X it copies that to xorg.conf.bak.

I am running CentOS 5.5 64-bit.
[root@cwatson ~]$ uname -a
Linux cwatson.homeunix.net 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.centos.plus #1 SMP Wed Nov 10 12:04:55 EST 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Does this monitor + graphics card combination work? As far as connections go, i have a DVI splitter, and since this new monitor only takes VGA or HDMI, I have a DVI-to-HDMI cable. The output on the card itself, I'm not sure. It doesn't look like DVI.
